Methodist Healthcare will open a full-service 100-bed hospital in Olive Branch, Mississippi in 2013.
On October 19, 2011, Methodist Healthcare broke ground on a new 100-bed hospital in Olive Branch, Mississippi. The new facility, located at the southeast corner of U.S. Highway 78 and Bethel Road, will be a full-service hospital offering:
- Emergency services
- Obstetrics
- Cardiology (including open heart)
- A diagnostic and therapeutic cardiac cath lab
- MRI
When the new hospital opens in mid-2013, it will allow Methodist Healthcare to better serve the approximately 47,000 Mississippi residents we already serve in our Memphis hospitals.
Gresham, Smith and Partners (GS&P), Smith Seckman Reid, Inc. (SSR) and Turner Construction Company have been selected as an integrated project delivery (IPD) team for the design and construction of the new hospital.

As you can see we are moving and shaking! We have just surpassed the 100,000 man-hours mark (that's a lot of work)! We are also currently pouring the 4th floor concrete. We fully expect to hit our mid-November topping out date. At that point the "structure" of the building will be complete. We are also currently underway with the brick on the outside of the building in some portions. Inside we have almost completely finished the mechanical and electrical overhead work in most of the 1st floor. We are finishing up the curb and gutter at the South parking lot this week which will get us out of the mud for good!

We have been extrememly busy since our last update! We have poured the concrete structure up to the 3rd floor and hope to be done with the concrete in November. Some electrical conduit and duct work is starting to go up as well. Over the next few weeks we will start putting the "skin" on the building to help keep water out of the interior.
We did have some wind damage over the Labor Day weekend from our tornado scare, but the contractors are doing a great job in keeping all of the workers safe and the job site secured.
We currently have the GMP (Guaranteed Maximum Price) form our Contractor - Turner Construction. In turn, the contractor has "bough-out" around 80% of all of the scopes. Every week we seem to get a new subcontractor on board!

Been another busy month here at Olive Branch. We got our tower crane put up and the concrete work has been going like crazy. We have a tough schedule with plans for the main structure to be completed by the end of fall. Our contractor Turner Construction and the Concrete Subcontractor Fly & Form have been doing great in pushing this schedule to keep us on our target.
We also have a new member of our staff. Barbara Smith is working in a mentoring program on the jobsite. She comes from our Minority Partner Precise Construction. She will learn all that she can from working with Turner on the project then take that knowledge back to her company in an effort for them to grow and learn new construction practices and trends. We are glad to have her on board!

It has been a busy few months here at the Methodist Olive Branch job site. We have completed all of the underground foundations for the new building and have a lot of the underground piping completed. We have completed 50 of the 250 geothermal wells that will be used to heat / cool the new building too. Also, the City of Olive Branch has started its design work for the new water tower and the new road that will go on our site as well.
We have completed our Construction Documents and soon we will have all of the different scopes of work under contract. We definitely have a busy year ahead of us!
Our construction manager, Turner Construction, has been doing a great job and so has our design team, Gresham Smith & Partners along with SSR Engineering. I want to thank them for all of their hard work over the past few weeks in keeping us on target!

The Olive Branch project is starting to kick into "high gear" this week! We have received confirmation that the State of Mississippi has agreed to fund $1.9 Million of work for the project as their contribution to bringing jobs and industry to the State. We are busy coordinating this work with the City of Olive Branch and the MDA (Mississippi Development Authority). We thank ALL the local and state level officials for their help in obtaining these funds!
We are presently halfway done with our final Construction Documents (CDs). Once these are done we can proceed with the selection of all remaining Subcontractors. We are presently proceeding with the selection of elevator, drywall, fire suppression, and pneumatic tube Subcontractors. We should have these scopes selected in the upcoming weeks.
Another part of finishing up the design of the project is the construction of mock-up rooms. This allows users to stand in the patient room, get a feel for the environment, and make comments of the locations of equipment, outlets, and furniture. For Olive Branch we have built 3 mock-ups (Med/Surge, LDR, and ICU). Also, I would like to thanks all the associates who I have dragged to countless meetings and that have provided priceless feedback and best practices!

You will be able to keep track with all the activity as we begin releasing work on the project site. Unfortunately the first work we are doing is building a new road just off camera to the left!

The Olive Branch Project is still making great progress! There is a lot of activity and many wheels in motion!
We expect our first real set of documents to come from the design team early next week. These are the DD Drawings (Design Development). The final set of drawings, from which we can complete the project, are called CDs (Construction Documents). Since this is a “fast track” project we will be starting work on things like foundations and site work before we get to the CD phase. This allows us to fully maximize the entire construction project timeline.
On another note, we have made the decision to go with a geothermal system for our heating and cooling needs at the new facility. This is an exciting opportunity for us in that it allows us to further increase the efficiency of the building, saving money for the system and help the environment. We will be one of the few hospitals in the country utilizing this technology.
In keeping with our commitment to patient and family centered care we are preparing to initiate the Olive Branch Hospital Family Partner Council. This will allow us to incorporate real patient and family feedback into the design and construction of the hospital allowing us to provide better care for the patient from the ground up. Call 901.516.0502 if you're interested in learning more about becoming a Family Partner for Olive Branch Hospital.
Also, don’t forget to check out the website www.mobhproject.com for general information and progress for the project.

The design phase of the Methodist Olive Branch Project is going great! We have just completed our second round of user group meetings where we have collected feedback on the design from clinical associates and physicians for every department in the hospital. This feedback has given us so many "best practices" and "lessons learned" that we are confident that we are building the most efficient and patient-friendly hospital possible!
A key aspect of the design is that we will be heating and cooling the hospital with water source heat pumps (WSHP). We will be one of the first few healthcare facilities in the country to use this very efficient technology. Also, we are orienting the departments so that from the front door the patient has immediate access to the ED, radiology, and admitting. This allows there to be one true entrance to the hospital and eliminates unnecessary travel by patients and associates.
Currently we are planning to actually start work on the job site the first week of January. This will entail "grading" the property and building access roads. Doing this will allow us to bring in material and equipment which will let us start the foundations and structure in the spring.
