Free Reading Tutoring Available to Shelby County 1st-3rd Graders!

Registration is open for families to sign up 1st-3rd grade students to receive free, fun literacy tutoring instruction!

Spots are limited, and registration will close on March 31, 2022.

To register students, families will need to complete a two-step process, which starts online.

Once a student is registered, they will be eligible to receive virtual, at-home tutoring for 30 minutes on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays for 12 weeks during the Spring 2022 school semester.

As part of the registration process, parents will be prompted to select their preferred tutoring days and times, and each student will be paired with an experienced, trained educator and two other students on similar reading levels to receive live, guided tutoring using the fun and engaging BookNook application.

This program is made available to Shelby County families in 2022 through a generous Connected Literacy grant awarded to Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare from the Tennessee Department of Education to expand the Community Collective for Reading Literacy initiative in partnership with BookNook and Shelby County Schools.

The primary goal of this partnership is to close student reading gaps and accelerate literacy development by providing early grades literacy support for students in grades one through three who are most impacted by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic,” said Dr. Albert Mosley, senior vice president and chief mission integration officer for MLH. “Parents and guardians can  enroll their students to participate in world-class tutoring focused on improving their child’s reading skills.”

The nucleus of the partnership began in the spring of 2019 with a pilot program with a seed grant from Shelby County-based Urban Child Institute, which has remained an active funder and partner in this work.
