Hands-Only CPR: What is it and How to Perform

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is a lifesaving procedure performed when the heart stops beating. If performed immediately on someone experiencing a heart attack, it can double or even triple the chance of survival. Hands-Only CPR is essentially CPR without rescue breaths.

Hands-Only CPR can be performed by anyone in two-simple steps:

  1. Call 911
  2. Push hard and fast in the center of the chest to the beat of the Bee Gees’ classic disco song “Stayin’ Alive.” The song is 100 beats per minute – the minimum rate you should push on the chest during Hands-Only CPR

Lifestyle Modifications to Improve Heart Health

Make smart choices in managing your health and you can significantly reduce your risk of heart disease and attack. The earlier in life you start to take control of your health, the better your odds of preventing and even surviving a heart attack.

  • Stop smoking
  • Control cholesterol
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Reduce blood sugar
  • Stay active
  • Eat better, maintain heart-healthy diet
  • Manage weight

The common thread for all of these measures? They are not inherited or genetic, so anyone can make these changes.
