The Germantown Municipal School District (GMSD) Health & Wellness Center opened in 2022 on the campus of Methodist Germantown Hospital, serving GMSD employees, dependents and retirees.

Dr. Shyam Sathanandam, medical director of Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital Interventional Catheterization Laboratory, pioneered the transcatheter PDA closure (TCPC) procedure in premature infants—a minimally invasive method to repair an unclosed hole in the aorta. Sathanandam brought TCPC to the bedside in Le Bonheur’s NICU, keeping infants in a stable care environment, allowing for repairs at a younger age and reducing overall recovery time for these tiny patients.

“The highest-risk part of transcatheter PDA closure is transport,” said Dr. Mark Weems, Le Bonheur NICU’s medical director. “These small babies are particularly sensitive to stimulation, changes in temperature and differences in ventilator settings, which are inevitable when moving a patient from the NICU to the cath lab. We believe offering PDA closure in the NICU will decrease transport-related risks and allow us to close the PDA earlier.”

While NICU bedside TCPC is largely new, early successes show it is safe and effective, and it is now the preferred method here. Sathanandam and his team hope to expand the service to NICUs at other leading-edge children’s hospitals, as they continue to educate other physicians through Le Bonheur’s annual PDA symposium.

Methodist North Hospital treats a high volume of patients with severe coronary artery disease, many of whom require surgery or interventions, including placement of stents, to preserve and prolong cardiac function. Dr. Claro Diaz, medical director of the cardiac catheterization lab, is participating in a multicenter trial to assess the safety and effectiveness of a new, minimally invasive treatment for coronary artery disease.

The novel treatment uses a drug-coated balloon catheter to treat blocked or narrowing arteries, offering a non-surgical alternative for patients with multiple stents. The trial is currently in the evaluation phase for long-term outcomes. The treatment, if deemed effective, will mean fewer surgeries, faster recovery times and easier care access for patients at-risk.

Methodist Germantown Hospital opened its fourth cardiac catheterization lab last year—a $3.9 million investment advancing the hospital’s interventional cardiology program. The lab features a digital X-ray system that produces precise, real-time imaging for minimally invasive cardiac procedures, including coronary angioplasty, implants and other procedures to diagnose and treat cardiovascular disease.

“This new lab positions us to better care for our patients, which ultimately means better outcomes,” said Dr. Michael McDonald, cardiac services medical director. “The bells and whistles are nice, but what the lab enables us to do for patients is paramount.”

The lab’s addition will accelerate the hospital’s expansion of electrophysiology services to include EP studies, ablations for heart arrhythmias and more.

Methodist Medical Group Primary Care received Gold honors from the American Heart Association and American Medical Association for top-quality care management in three key areas: blood pressure, cholesterol and type 2 diabetes management.

MMG clinics facilitate a blood pressure program designed to help patients improve BP control rates, reducing instances of heart attack and stroke. MMG’s diabetes education program promotes awareness, detection and better management of type 2 diabetes through evidence-based tools and content delivery. And, the “Check. Change. Control.” program provides education and resources to help patients more successfully manage cholesterol levels. Patient data reflects:

• impressive HbA1c control in patients with diabetes
• exceptional appropriate statin therapy use throughout our at-risk cholesterol patient population
• an exceptional 70 percent or greater BP control rate throughout our adult patient population.

For patients suffering from lymphedema — swelling of the arms, legs or other extremities due to fluid build-up resulting from cancer treatments— or needing to regain mobility, MLH now offers a dedicated rehabilitation clinic. While no cures are currently available for lymphedema, it can be treated with exercise, compression garments and specialized massage therapy to manually drain lymph fluid.

Launched in July 2022 to serve Methodist Cancer Institute patients experiencing breast cancer-associated lymphedema, the clinic has since expanded care to patients suffering from head and neck lymphedema. Led by an occupational therapist, the program is helping patients return to a greater quality of life following a cancer diagnosis and subsequent treatments.

Gloria Williams was recently treated by Holly Greer, a Certified Lymphedema Therapist with the MCI Lymphedema Clinic. “I came to MCI and found an entire team who set a care plan and connected with me as a person. It’s been a difficult journey, but I lean on Holly as a confidante, a medical professional and now like a daughter. Holly leads and I follow. She has been with me every step of the way since my surgery.”

Holly says Gloria is an inspiration. “Gloria painted her bathroom pink. She didn’t let cancer define her. It became a part of her story, but not her whole story.”

The Methodist Cancer Institute is one of 10 centers in the U.S. to offer magnetic resonance linear accelerator technology (MR-LINAC). Methodist University Hospital is home to the imaging device, developed by Elekta Unity, and began delivering its targeted radiation therapies to patients in October 2022.

The Elekta system integrates two vital radiation therapy technologies —a high-field diagnostic MRI system and next-generation linear accelerator technology. The system’s groundbreaking precision allows providers to monitor and track hard-to-see, hard-to-treat soft tissue cancerous tumors with unsurpassed accuracy, adjusting radiation levels in real time as the tumor changes position, shape and proximity to internal organs and reducing potential exposure to healthy tissues and organs. The device is also expected to enable new therapeutic options for cancers deemed difficult to treat.

“Our first-in-region implementation of MR-LINAC technology demonstrates that comprehensive, industry-leading cancer care is available close to home,” said Dr. Lloyd Geddes, medical director, Methodist Cancer Institute. “From diagnosis to completion of treatment, the Methodist Cancer Institute can support patients and their families through any stage of a cancer diagnosis.”

While use of this technology is relatively new in cancer care, MR-LINAC radiation therapy is expected to prove safer and more effective than traditional treatment modalities. For Methodist patients, this could translate to fewer treatment sessions, enhanced protections for healthy tissue and a reduction in treatment-related side effects.

Forty years ago, our organization performed its first liver transplant. Today, the transplant program at Methodist University Hospital has successfully performed nearly 4,500 organ transplants through our partnership with the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, setting a new one-year record—328—in 2022. MTI also announced a new program director last year, renowned transplant surgeon Dr. Jason Vanatta. An MLH team member for almost 10 years, Dr. Vanatta is the endowed chair for Excellence in Liver Transplantation at UTHSC and was director of MLH’s liver transplant program.

“Transplantation is possibly the greatest breakthrough in medicine to date,” said Vanatta. “I knew as a teenager I wanted to be part of this world, and I am most appreciative of the village it takes to achieve success in our field. I want to thank the physicians, nurses, caregivers and donors who work to bring new life and health to patients living with end-stage organ disease.”

Vanatta emphasizes the critical importance of organ donation, acknowledging that the demand for transplantable organs significantly outweighs the supply, locally and nationally. The list of patients awaiting an organ transplant in Memphis numbers around 800 people. According to Vanatta, as many as three or four people in our community die each month before an organ becomes available.

“An organ donor has the potential to save up to eight lives,” said Vanatta. “We can save lives here in our community by registering and encouraging our family and friends to be organ donors. When we pass on, this opportunity to make a precious gift could save the life of another.”

The Electrophysiology (EP) team at Methodist University Hospital was first in Tennessee to introduce the DiamondTemp ablation system that uses a safer, more efficient instrument for recurring irregular heartbeats or arrhythmias. The latest advancement in EP technology, DiamondTemp treats persistent arrhythmias through application of heat, or ablation. A specialized catheter uses radiofrequency technology to measure the temperature of a patient’s heart tissue throughout the procedure, ensuring the catheter does not emit enough heat to damage healthy heart tissue. DiamondTemp is so efficient and effective that patients can be discharged home the same day of ablation.

“We live in an area where cardiac arrhythmias are very common, and we’re fortunate to have the latest technology to fix abnormal heartbeats safely and efficiently,” said Dr. Yehoshua Levine, MLH cardiologist, in an interview with Action News 5. “We see individuals who have been frequenting the doctor’s office and emergency room for years, and often, all it takes is a single two-hour procedure for the patient to experience significant improvements. It’s common that patients will no longer require the strong medications they were taking to keep their arrhythmia under control—all because of a minimally invasive, relatively painless procedure.”

MLH is the world’s first healthcare system to implement an award-winning, peer-reviewed protocol enabling eligible patients who undergo heart valve replacement or repairs to be discharged home the same day. And for patients like 100-year-old Vernice Jones—the first in the world to receive a heart valve replacement and return home the same day—the new valve and its simplified implantation protocol are offering a new lease on life.

A centenarian who doesn’t even wear reading glasses, Jones began stumbling and became extremely weak last year before the procedure to replace her heart’s failing valve. Now, her daughter, Beverle Spruill, says Jones is a “10 out of 10 improvement” and has resumed her daily exercise routine and tasks for independent living, such as doing her own laundry and cooking for family members this past Thanksgiving.

“My mother’s view on life is the secret to her longevity,” said Spruill. “She treats people the way she wants to be treated, she’s spiritual and she doesn’t worry about her age. She’s always been a vibrant person and continues to do the things she loves.”

Developed under the leadership of Dr. Mehul Patel, interventional cardiologist for Jones and director of MLH’s structural heart disease program and hybrid lab, the same-day discharge protocol has been well received by fellow cardiovascular surgeons and other valve centers. Patel now advises heart centers around the world.

“As the pandemic placed strain on hospitals, we developed a new process to ensure at-risk heart patients receive timely, life-saving care,” said Patel. “Regardless of patient age, this procedure can improve both quality and longevity of life. We are making incredible advancements here in Memphis and are eager to share these innovations with colleagues to improve patient care across the country and the globe.”

During the minimally invasive procedure, MLH cardiologists access the heart using a small leg incision, rather than open-heart surgery. If a patient’s follow-up testing, including a heart ultrasound and EKG, is satisfactory and the patient has a dependable caregiver, he or she can return home the same day.

Jones and daughter Beverle were at Methodist Germantown Hospital for less than six hours, and she was up and walking around within two hours. She spent the next two weeks recuperating at home before beginning cardiac rehabilitation.

Said Patel, “We are leading the healthcare industry by offering same-day discharge for a broad spectrum of heart procedures, such as transcatheter aortic valve replacement, valve repairs and Watchman procedures, allowing qualifying patients the benefit of recovering in the comfort of their own home.”

Last year, MLH expanded recruitment efforts into international territory, tapping new sources of skilled nursing talent and addressing national labor shortages.

Led by Don Hutson, vice president of talent management and Nikki Polis, chief nursing executive, MLH nursing leaders visited Dubai, Abu Dhabi and the Philippines to interview registered nurses, inviting qualified candidates to join our team. More than 100 RNs will begin new careers—and new lives in America—as a result. To date, we have hired hundreds of nurses and medical technologists. These new team members will be onboarded over the next two years.

MLH also partners with agencies like Connectics USA, an international nursing agency, to recruit new talent. One such nurse, Mervin Lopez, relocated his family from the Middle East to Memphis in October 2021 to work on the cardiac medical surgical unit at Methodist University Hospital.

As the first generation of immigrants in their family, Mervin and his wife, Judy, made the decision with hopes of securing a brighter future for their two children, both high school seniors. After graduation, son Kyle enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, and is preparing for his first military deployment. Daughter Kirsten enrolled in nursing school and has completed her first year on the Dean’s List.

Diversity and inclusion are integral to our delivery of reimagined care, as we work to address economic disparities, access barriers and social determinants of health preventing the realization of health equity. Last year, Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare was named a 2022 Top Diversity Leader by Modern Healthcare, one of just nine organizations across the country and the only health system in the Southeast to receive this prestigious award.

Through partnerships with local churches and community providers, and with federal grant funding from Health Resources and Services Administration, the MLH Congregational Health Network hosted almost 60 vaccine pop-up events and outreach, resulting in nearly 4,200 COVID-19 vaccines to community members in need of preventive care.

When Methodist University Hospital began screening patients for food insecurities, staff learned that more than 50 percent of patients screened are affected in some way. The hospital teamed up with the Mid-South Food Bank to launch the Food Pharmacy program in 2022 to help alleviate food-related stressors for patients recovering from recent hospitalization

“Over half of our patients don’t have reliable access to food in their homes and have no reasonable means of getting food in a timely manner,” said Stacy Smith, director, strategic innovation for MLH.

Patients who identify as food insecure receive a box of food on discharge, with enough groceries for their household for three days. This effort also supports medication compliance for individuals whose medications should be taken with food.

Methodist South Hospital is teaming up with law enforcement to address community violence, a leading health concern impacting adults and children in Memphis. Hospital staff has fostered a robust relationship with Memphis Police Department officers in Whitehaven.

Hospital representatives participate in local Neighborhood Watch meetings, support the Raines Station precinct’s community events and speak on healthcare topics. Likewise, officers serve on the hospital’s Community Advisory Council, support its community events and consult with the hospital team on topics concerning social determinants of health.

The inaugural class of MLH internal medicine residents began in July 2022, reflecting a meaningful step toward health equity and diversity. Historically, MLH has connected residents from partnering institutions with onsite training opportunities. With approval from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, MLH now sponsors its own Internal Medicine Residency Program.

“This enables us to leverage our clinical learning environments to train, mentor and develop physicians with the most pressing healthcare needs facing our community,” said Dr. Kathleen Forbes, executive vice president, academic group. “With population health strategies for healthcare inequalities and disparities, we can equip the next generation of providers with a greater awareness of, and responsiveness to, those issues.”

Experiential learning opportunities range from hands-on patient care and weekly didactic education sessions to monthly Grand Rounds lectures on medical subspecialties and social determinants of health.

It often takes more than stitches to heal the wounded. Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital is now using a Hospital-Based Violence Intervention Program to help break the cycle of violence and reduce recurring incidents among child victims of traumatic injuries. Launched in March 2022, Le Bonheur’s HVIP works in tandem with the City of Memphis Group Violence Intervention Program.

Our experts treat two to three children every week for gunshot wounds – about 150 in an average year. Dr. Regan Williams, Trauma Services medical director, understands that to help a child heal, the whole family must be treated. SHIFT—Supporting and Healing Individuals from Trauma— was also launched last year to provide psychological care, counseling and even housing relocation services for children and families and to help them avoid further violence.

“Without proper intervention, traumatic experiences can negatively impact long-term function and increase overall mental health distress in these kids,” said Williams. “Proper screening, early identification and treatment can lead to improved mental health outcomes among children post-injury.”

Le Bonheur is also partnering with over a dozen like-minded institutions in the Shelby County community to expand SHIFT and HVIP services to youth in the juvenile court system. With federal grant funding from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, the MLH Community Outreach division provides comprehensive services and support to youth ages 8-17, as well as younger at-risk siblings, in local zip codes identified as high risk for violence.

On June 15, 2022, Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital—with help from the Memphis Grizzlies—celebrated 70 years providing hope and healing to children in the Mid-South, the U.S. and around the world. Since its founding in 1952, Le Bonheur has evolved from a small community hospital to a nationally ranked leader in pediatric health.

“Our strong programs of excellence allow us to provide cutting-edge treatments and make groundbreaking discoveries that save lives,” said Michael Wiggins, Le Bonheur president. “While we have seen many technological changes and advancements in medicine, one thing has remained the same—our unwavering commitment to kids. We are proud that generations of families know they can rely on Le Bonheur Children’s to meet their needs and provide expert care.”

Today, Le Bonheur cares for the tiniest neonates with critical needs, operates on young adults who require complex brain surgeries, treats children with serious heart defects and leads 29 comprehensive community programs to address children’s needs beyond hospital walls. Because of Le Bonheur, children who might not have survived a few decades ago are now thriving.

Expectant parents want the best care a community can offer, and Methodist South Hospital was deemed just that in Money magazine’s profile of the nation’s 2022 Best Hospitals for Maternity Care. Money used data from the 2022 Leapfrog Hospital Survey to identify top hospitals for moms and babies. Methodist South is one of only five Tennessee hospitals to receive the designation.

Methodist Olive Branch Hospital also earned several distinctions last year, including Newsweek’s list of America’s Best Maternity Hospitals. Newsweek and data firm Statista based rankings on patient satisfaction data, medical performance indicators and a nationwide survey of maternity healthcare professionals. Methodist Olive Branch was also named a 2022 Women’s Choice Award Best Hospital for Obstetrics and Maternity Care.

Le Bonheur expanded its footprint in West Tennessee and the Mid-South last year, increasing access to specialized pediatric care. Established in collaboration with West Tennessee Healthcare, Le Bonheur’s 21-bed pediatric unit at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital a brings expert care closer to home.

Shortly after opening, Le Bonheur’s presence was already proving a game-changer for children like Emily Morales, one of the first patients admitted to the unit. An active 14 year old, Emily passed out and became unresponsive at school, and it was clear she needed specialized care, quickly.

“Having that pediatric care close to home was so important,” said Edna Morales, Emily’s mother, who works in administration and provider relations at Le Bonheur’s Outpatient Center in Jackson. “You could see the little details that make it a Le Bonheur facility. You could see the staff’s compassion and care for Emily and for me and their passion to find out what was going on. I completely trusted that they were going to do the best thing for her.”

Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital now offers the AngelEye Health System that allows families to remotely view their babies in the NICU. Thanks to a generous donation from the Charach family, 24/7 streaming footage with AngelEye helps families feel more connected and comforted.

For Baby Daxton, a Le Bonheur NICU patient for 10 months, the addition of AngelEye technology made a radical, immediate difference in his family’s quality of life, alleviating a tremendous amount of stress and anxiety.

“AngelEye has given us an indescribable amount of peace of mind and makes coping with an extended hospital stay much more bearable,” said Brittney Monk, Daxton’s mother. “We live over an hour away, and on days when we cannot get to the hospital, we can watch him enjoying playtime or snuggled up resting and growing.”

Daxton’s great-grandparents recently told Brittney they watch Daxton every day, often leaving the video feed up until their phone’s battery is drained.

“AngelEye has cut down on calls for updates because his nurses can relay information to us quickly and effectively using the app,” said Brittney. “Being in the NICU for so long has been a rollercoaster ride of emotions, but we’ve had some of the best nurses, therapists and physicians we could have ever asked for. We know our son is alive and thriving because of their hard work, dedication, love and healing touch.”

Designed to evoke the look and feel of home, Methodist Hospice Residence is a freestanding facility where families and friends can share in the last days of a loved one’s life. Adults and children who are terminally ill and require care in a residential setting are met with beautiful walking paths and gardens, spacious private rooms, compassionate complex care and 24-hour open visitation for family, friends and pets.

A $500,000 gift recognizing our 10th year of service from Teresa and Keith O’Neill -- MLH supporters for more than 20 years – has sparked plans for a $3 million endowment that will help secure our services for generations to come.

A fundraising campaign for the endowment launched in November 2022 at the annual Night Life for Methodist Hospice event, with gifts to date nearing $1 million. The endowment will serve as a source of sustained financial support for MHR, securing its future and making it possible to cover end-of-life care costs for patients in need.

Leroy Newby grew up working on cars and thought he might become a mechanic. Instead, for 33 years, he’s been serving at Methodist North Hospital, spending the last 14 years as a hyperbaric oxygen therapy technician. The hospital’s Wound Healing Center features two hyperbaric oxygen chambers, delivering oxygen to tissue to facilitate wound healing for patients with diabetic ulcers, bone infections, cancer, radiation damage, crush injuries and other conditions.

A native Memphian, Newby’s warm demeanor and approachable personality help patients breathe easier as they prepare to enter the chamber—an enclosed space that can invoke feelings of claustrophobia and anxiety.

“Our patients are never left alone—I sit right next to them during treatment,” said Newby. “With the chamber’s PA system, I use a phone to communicate and can hear everything the patient says.”

Newby was recognized with the Power of One Award, the hospital’s highest honor. While he could easily be lauded for kindness to patients, he was recognized after using personal break time to retrieve tools from his car and repair a wheel on an elderly patient’s walker. In an interview with ABC 24 News, Newby shared that he enjoys “returning people to a normal quality of life.”

Dave Gamble, a Methodist Cancer Institute patient, was referred for a side effect from radiation treatment following a cancer diagnosis and surgery.
