A Message from Our President + CEO

While 2022 was not a year immune from challenges for Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare, it was a year marked by recovery, renewal, reimagining and rebirth. Last year, we celebrated meaningful milestones, new transformative partnerships, significant care advances and restoration of health and hope for tens of thousands of patients.

We also launched a new strategic plan, charting a clear path forward to build a brighter future within a continually changing healthcare landscape. Called MLH Reimagined, the plan builds upon our bold actions over the past four decades—decisions that advanced our ability to meet community needs and demonstrated our strength as the anchor healthcare system for Memphis and the Mid-South.

Six strategic imperatives prioritize our goals and reflect core focus areas to improve care delivery for our patients, Associates, partnering physicians and the communities we serve. Less than one year into our MLH Reimagined journey, we are already seeing some extraordinary results.

I believe this plan positions our organization—and our community—for greater success and better health in the years ahead. By following this road map and holding ourselves accountable, together, we will realize our vision to improve every life we touch.

Thank you for joining us in our mission to care,

Michael Ugwueke, MPH, DHA, FACHE
President and CEO

Reimagining Care for Whole Communities

Meeting real needs in real time

Our central purpose remains to provide adults and children in Memphis and surrounding communities with reliable access to great care to whomever enters our doors. As the region’s only healthcare system with a presence in all corners of the Mid-South, we offer a robust network of outreach and education programs designed to address health disparities and protect the most vulnerable populations.

To identify the most pressing healthcare needs of those we serve, MLH conducted a comprehensive assessment in 2022. As an integral part of our strategic plan, MLH Reimagined, it guides us in shaping programs and outreach efforts to improve the health of those we serve.

leading causes of death in our community CONCERNS AFFECTING HEALTH + ABILITY TO THRIVE

The Community Health Needs Assessment demonstrated the five leading causes of death in our community:

  • Heart disease
  • Cancer
  • COVID-19
  • Unintentional injuries
  • Stroke

Our community also shared concerns that significantly affect health and ability to thrive:

  • Poverty
  • Access to healthcare
  • Community violence
  • Homelessness
  • Health literacy + education

CREATING SOLUTIONS TO IMPROVE EVERY LIFE WE TOUCH

MLH is investing in the necessary resources, forging the right partnerships and innovating the breakthrough programming to better the health of our community members and improve every life we touch.

Innovating High-Quality Healthcare Solutions

The best place to get better

Patients seeking care at MLH facilities can rest easy knowing that their health, safety and personal well-being will be met with clinical excellence, compassion and the best care our community has to offer.

We are proud to lead the Mid-South for excellence in healthcare. Our scores reflect staff dedication to achieving the highest caliber of care and reflect an ongoing commitment to improve not only the lives of every patient we serve, but the overarching quality of care for our community.

In just three years, MLH significantly elevated our care delivery model, advancing from 2-star to 4- and 5-star CMS ratings, by launching a comprehensive improvement plan to elevate our performance. Strategies included:

  • Specialized safety trainings for all staff
  • Enhanced in-house performance tracking
  • Transition to more stringent accreditation (i.e., holding ourselves to higher clinical standards)
  • Benchmarking against industry best practices for quality and safety
  • Aligning leader incentive plans with systemwide performance measures

MLH became the first healthcare system in Tennessee to earn full ISO 9001 Quality Management System certification, demonstrating systematic, repeatable and well-deployed practices that ensure safe patient care.

ELEVATING PATIENT CARE ACROSS THE SYSTEM

MLH is leading the way in delivering high-quality, innovative, compassionate care, especially for those most in need of our support.

The heart of excellence

Central to our strategic plan is the goal to reimagine our delivery of cardiac care. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for individuals in our community, which is why MLH is working to develop a Cardiology Center of Excellence—a one-stop, seamless care experience for patients in the Mid-South.

Our cardiology program combines the latest in leading-edge technologies and treatment options, trained experts and convenient care locations that provide comprehensive clinical, diagnostic, interventional, surgical and electrophysiological cardiac care to patients and their families.

Because we recognize that no two patients are alike, we create a heart care plan to fit each person’s needs.

Revolutionizing global treatment, local care Integrating new technology Pioneering pediatric procedures Assessing novel treatments Expanding the field Garnering gold

Better than a fighting chance

As cancer is the second leading cause of death within our community, expansion of the Methodist Cancer Institute into an Oncology Center of Excellence is another foundational tenet of our strategic plan. This program will be designed and brought to life in concert with our providers, patients and families as a comprehensive, patient-focused treatment center.

Because our dedicated team of oncology experts understands that every cancer is unique, our patients are connected with a personalized treatment plan tailored to their needs using specialized services for mammography, blood and bone marrow, medical oncology, radiation oncology and surgical oncology. Our holistic approach to healing addresses not just the physical health concerns of our patients, but also emotional, mental and spiritual well-being. Above all, we focus on treating the individual—not just the disease.

Groundbreaking care, close by Restoring strength, quality of life

New lease on life

A leader in organ transplantation for more than 40 years, the Methodist Transplant Institute strives to improve both quality of life and life expectancy for transplant patients. Since program inception, we have performed nearly 4,500 transplants, and our kidney transplant program has achieved one of the highest survival rates in the country.

Our state-of-the-art transplant facility features the latest advancements in transplant technology in an open, inviting atmosphere designed to provide patients and their loved ones with the greatest degree of comfort and confidence. MTI offers experts skilled in transplantation of the liver, kidney, pancreas and living organs, as well as transplant research, pediatric transplantation and hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery.

In partnership with the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, our transplant program is improving outcomes and overall quality of life for transplant patients through research breakthroughs, excellence in surgical techniques, meticulous postoperative care and a patient-centered care delivery model.

Reimagining a stronger future

Because healthcare doesn’t happen without healthcare providers, the leading imperative of our strategic plan is to rebuild and fortify our workforce, the true backbone of MLH. We work every day to improve every life we touch—and that includes the lives of our Associates and providers.

Against the backdrop of a rapidly evolving professional landscape, stabilization of our workforce is critical, and we believe that growing and developing our team members is the best possible investment toward a stronger, more sustainable future. To be successful, we’re forming new partnerships, creating new opportunities and investing in the right resources to care for the people who care for our patients.
