This week, Methodist North Hospital sponsored a stress management workshop for Craigmont Middle School teachers and faculty as part of their professional development day. The staff participated in mindfulness exercises and a guided virtual painting experience both led by trained facilitators via Zoom.

About 50 teachers participated, including school counselor Sherry Johnson. Johnson, who oversees sixth and eighth graders, also provides self-care resources to the middle school staff.

“We appreciate Methodist North Hospital for sponsoring this professional development day,” said Johnson. “They’ve been wonderful partners during this pandemic, and prior to, ensuring that our teachers and students have enough supplies and resources to feel safe in the classrooms.”

Staff participated in mindfulness exercises focused on breathing and self-awareness techniques. A painting demonstration followed and staff were guided to paint a lighthouse, a symbol of strength. Staff also received a key flashlight, reminding them there is light at the end of the tunnel.

“Especially during this pandemic, our teachers need a sigh of relief. We hope they will utilize the mindfulness and stress management techniques we learned, and take time for themselves. We have to take care of ourselves so we can take care of others,” said Johnson.

Methodist North Hospital has partnered with Craigmont Middle for the past two years, officially adopting the school earlier this year.
