Surgical Weight Loss

Surgical weight loss, often called bariatric surgery, is the surgical process of altering your digestive system to achieve and sustain significant weight loss. Bariatric surgery is usually recommended as treatment for severe obesity when diet and exercise alone aren’t enough to lose significant weight.

When combined with diet, exercise and behavioral changes, bariatric surgery can be highly effective at addressing severe obesity and helping you maintain a long-term, healthy weight.

Risk factors for obesity

Severe obesity can be attributed to certain risk factors like:

  • Lack of physical activity
  • Unhealthy eating patterns
  • Lack of sleep
  • Stress

While bariatric surgery is helpful in treating obesity, understanding the associated risk factors is important in helping you develop healthy behaviors, make proper lifestyle changes and prepare for life after bariatric surgery.

Treatment Options

Bariatric surgery is a life-changing decision, which is why our team takes a detailed approach when evaluating each patient for weight loss surgery.

Before making any recommendation, we will review your medical history and consider your body mass index (BMI) to determine if you are a good candidate for surgical weight loss. Surgical weight loss may be a good option if you have:

  • BMI > 40
  • BMI > 35-40 with a weight related health condition

After evaluating your medical history, BMI and weight loss goals, we will outline your options for surgical weight loss. These laparoscopic, minimally invasive surgical options include:

  • Gastric sleeve (or sleeve gastrectomy) – Surgery in which a portion of the stomach is removed to restrict the amount of food you are able to eat.
  • Gastric bypass – Surgery in which a small pouch is created from the stomach and connected directly to the small intestine, bypassing a portion of the intestine.
