Learn Your Risk. Know the Symptoms.
Early detection can save lives. During Lung Cancer Awareness Month, learn your risk, recognize the warning signs, and find out if a lung cancer screening is right for you.
Lung Cancer Is Often Silent Until Symptoms Appear
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States, and many people do not experience symptoms in the early stages.
Causes and Risk Factors
- Tobacco Smoke: Smoking cigarettes, pipes, or cigars causes most lung cancers. Secondhand smoke also raises risk.
- Radon Gas: A natural radioactive gas that can build up in homes.
- Workplace Toxins: Breathing in asbestos, arsenic, or diesel exhaust.
- Genetics: A family history of lung cancer raises your personal risk.
Lung cancer can go undiagnosed for a long time because symptoms usually do not appear until the cancer has spread. If you are over the age of 50 and currently smoke, or have quit within the last 15 years, you may be at high risk and be eligible for lung cancer screening. Let your provider know if you meet any of these high-risk factors.
What Are the Early Signs of Lung Cancer?
If you experience any of the following symptoms, talk with your healthcare provider:
- A cough that doesn't go away
- Coughing up blood
- Shortness of breath
- Chest pain
- Hoarseness
- Unexplained weight loss
- Recurring respiratory infections
- Persistent fatigue
Early detection offers the best opportunity for successful treatment.
Are You Eligible for Lung Cancer Screening?
A low-dose CT (LDCT) scan can help detect lung cancer before symptoms develop.
You may be eligible for a screening if you:
- Are between 50 and 80 years old
- Have a significant smoking history
- Currently smoke or have quit within the past 15 years
- Meet other clinical risk factors as determined by your healthcare provider
