Venous Disorders and Treatment

The venous system, comprised of tiny one-way valves called veins, is part of the circulatory system and directs blood flow throughout the body. When these veins malfunction, blood begins to flow backwards causing pressure to build and weaken the veins resulting in venous disorders, such as:

Venous Insufficiency — improper blood drainage in the legs which causes blood to pool in veins

Deep Vein Thrombosis — a blood clot that forms in a vein located deep inside the body

Varicose Veins — swollen and twisted veins that lie underneath the skin in the legs

Spider Veins — smaller version of varicose veins, often resembling a spider web, that can appear in the legs or on the face

Risk Factors

Certain risk factors increase your chances of developing venous disorders. These risk factors include:

  • Obesity
  • Lack of exercise
  • Family history
  • Gender
  • Age

While some of these risk factors are unavoidable, our team of experienced vascular surgeons can help you understand your risk for developing venous disorders and provide a treatment plan specific to you.

Treatment Options

We use advanced technology to determine the source of your venous disorder and treat your condition. We will work with you to develop a treatment plan that considers your overall health and meets your needs.

All treatment options for venous disorders are minimally invasive, meaning they can be done in our office or as an outpatient procedure. These treatment options include:

Endovenous Laser Treatment — use of laser energy to close off the saphenous vein and treat venous insufficiency

Inferior Vena Cava Filter Placement and Retrieval — a filtering device is placed within the inferior vena cava (a large vein in the abdomen) that prevents blood clots by returning blood from the lower half of the body back to the heart

Sclerotherapy — involves injecting a solution into small and medium varicose veins that closes the vein

Transilluminated Power Phlebectomy Surgery — a procedure that allows the surgeon to use a guided light device to target and remove varicose veins

What to Expect

Our team is dedicated to helping you feel your best. Since most venous treatments are minimally invasive, you should feel back to normal relatively soon after your procedure.

However, your doctor may recommend:

  • Wearing compression stockings to prevent blood pooling in your legs
  • Regularly walking for exercise
  • Elevating your legs to help the blood flow to and from your heart
