The MLH Summer Nurse Intern Program
The Student Nurse Internship Program provides students with the opportunity to work in a healthcare setting under the guidance of an RN preceptor. It is an 8 (eight) week summer program for student nurses enrolled in an accredited BSN program.
Purpose of the MLH Summer Nurse Intern Program
The program provides students with an opportunity to refine nursing skills and build confidence while working with a full-time experienced registered nurse
What makes this program unique?
- This program is budgeted centrally through corporate and overseen by the Director, Nurse Residency & Recruitment
- This is the first or second step in the MLH Nursing Pipeline
- Summer Nurse Interns are immersed in the “real-life” role of the RN
- Summer Nurse Interns are paired with an experienced RN, and work full-time, night and weekend shifts for 8 weeks during the summer.
- Upon successful completion of the program, summer nurse interns may be eligible to by-pass interviews and transition to the Student Nurse Extern role.
Program Dates
Eight weeks June through July
Expectations of Summer Nurse Interns
- Attend System Orientation, Interdisciplinary Orientation, Professional Practice at the Bedside and Summer Nurse Intern Orientation
- Attend educational sessions provided by Clinical Education Services (CES)
- Work the same schedule as assigned preceptor; full time, 12 hour shifts, work off shifts (evenings/nights/weekends) no vacation/personal leave granted during the internship.
- Demonstrate engagement and active participation in unit activities.
- Demonstrate professionalism, MLH core values, and personal accountability.
Eligibility
- Applicants should be between their junior and senior years.
- Must be enrolled in a BSN program.
- Must be in good standing in the school of nursing.
- Must be enrolled in an accredited school of nursing program.
- Must have successfully completed two semesters of clinical work or equivalent and be within one year of graduation from an approved registered nurse program with a minimum overall GPA of 3.0.
Applying to the MLH Summer Internship Program
Qualified applicants should apply in January for the following summer.
Applications will be accepted during the month of January for the following summer and will be published on the MLH Nurse Residency web-page.
