About the MLH Student Nurse Extern Program

The Student Nurse Extern Program provides senior-level nursing students enrolled in an accredited BSN program with the opportunity to work in a healthcare setting in a variety of roles. For example, Student Nurse Externs may work with an RN to provide care to an assigned number of patients, work as sitters, or work as unit coordinators.

Purpose of the MLH Student Nurse Extern Program.

The program provides senior-level nursing students with an opportunity to improve communication and collaboration skills and build confidence while working with the interdisciplinary team in the healthcare setting

What makes this program unique?

This is a flexible, prn program designed specifically for nursing students to gain experience in the healthcare setting.

Student Nurse Externs that have met the minimum worked hours, maintained a minimum 3.0 GPA and completed an application for the MLH Vizient/AACN Nurse Residency Program, may be eligible to by-pass panel interviews and transition to RN Cat 3 Resident on their current unit.

Expectations of Student Nurse Externs

  • Complete the System Orientation online modules
  • Attend unit orientation
  • Work a minimum of 16 hours per 3 (three) months, which may include nights/evenings/days/weekends
  • Maintain and provide evidence of 3.0 GPA upon completion of each grading term
  • Demonstrate engagement and active participation in unit activities.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, MLH core values, and personal accountability.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must have completed a minimum of 2 (two) Clinical Semesters and be within one calendar year of graduation from their nursing program.
  • Applicants must be currently enrolled in a BSN program at an accredited school or college of nursing and in good standing with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.
  • Applicants must on board prior to the opening of the MLH Vizient/AACN NRP application, for which they are eligible.  Student Nurse Externs must maintain and provide ongoing evidence of 3.0 GPA while in role.
