Leadless Pacemaker

Arrhythmia Consultants at Methodist University Hospital is participating in a clinical trial for leadless pacemakers, a breakthrough technology to help treat and manage irregular heartbeat rhythm.  Unlike conventional pacemakers, the leadless device is placed directly in the heart without a need for a surgical pocket and insulated wires called leads.  The leadless pacemaker is also meant to provide less discomfort than the traditional version when the device is engaged.

The leadless device is implanted directly in the heart through a vein in the thighs.   The implant procedure does not require surgery like a traditional procedure, and is considered a less-invasive approach for patients who need pacemaker technology.

The leadless pacemaker is less than 10 percent the size of a conventional pacemaker. The small size of the device, coupled with the lack of a surgical pocket, improves patient comfort.  With a  lesser threat of dislodgment than the traditional version, the leadless pacemaker also allows patients to increase activity which may improve quality of life.
