Epilepsy

Published On 07/11/2011

Epilepsy is a neurological condition that results in recurrent brain malfunctions known as seizures. A seizure is a sudden surge of electrical activity in the brain that usually affects how a person feels or acts for a short time. They may be violent muscle contractions, or they might be more subtle "loss of contact" moments of what appears to be daydreaming.

Our Comprehensive Level IV Epilepsy Center is the only one of its kind in the area and specializes in neurological and neurosurgical evaluation and treatment. Focus areas include neuropharmacological treatment, neuroimaging, long-term epilepsy monitoring, neuropsychology and neuropsychiatry. The CEC is also equipped to perform temporal lobectomies, resective surgery, extra-temporal surgery and vagus nerve stimulation.

The Comprehensive Seizure Monitoring Unit at Methodist University Hospital is devoted to epilepsy detection and treatment and specializes in long-term seizure monitoring. The brainwaves and heart rate of epilepsy patients are recorded for several days to evaluate seizure activity and rule out psychological problems.
