The Fundamentals: Floyd Tyler is the Founder and President/Chief Investment Officer of PreserverPartners, LLC, an alternative asset management firm that manages private investment funds from public and corporate pension funds, foundations, and individual investors, and serves as the Portfolio Manager to the Preserver Alternative Opportunities mutual fund. He has a daughter, Rian, who is nine. He joined the Methodist Healthcare Foundation Board in July 2015.
Starting Out: Born in Chicago, Floyd moved to Memphis when he was five. He lived in the Orange Mound area and attended Central High School and then The University of Tennessee at Martin where he received a Bachelor of Business Administration in Economics.
On the Road: Floyd then attended Carnegie Mellon University and earned a Master of Science in Public Policy and Management. Before going on to earn a Ph.D. in Finance at Florida State University, Floyd served as an Instructor of Economics at UT Martin. His advice from that experience: “Never take a class with a first-year college professor!”
Back to His Roots: After earning his Ph.D. from FSU - and becoming an avid Florida State University Football fan (Go Seminoles!) - Floyd returned to Memphis. He served as an Assistant Professor of Finance at the University of Memphis, teaching upper level financial management and investment courses. Floyd then joined Gerber/Taylor Capital Advisors where he worked for 10 years.
Entrepreneur: With much success and experience under his belt, Floyd decided to open PreserverPartners, LLC to provide alternative asset management to public and corporate pension funds, foundations and individual investors. He shared, “I wanted to see if I could build something that reflected my vision and values.” Starting with himself as the sole employee with one client, PreserverPartners has grown in five years to include four full-time employees serving 48 clients.
Vision in the Workplace: Floyd’s drive and kind heart are evident in his stated vision for PreserverPartners: “Every day, I ask myself and my team to focus on why we are here. I want to ensure we focus on the most important things - taking care of our current clients, offering strong returns and managing risk, respecting our clients and one another, and having fun along the way.”
The Methodist Connection: Floyd started his leadership at Methodist when he became a member of the Le Bonheur Foundation Board of Directors in 2011. During his three-year tenure, Floyd became a leader on the Community Health & Well Being Board and developed a passion for the hospital’s efforts to reach and serve the communities in Memphis that had the greatest need for health care information, connection and resources.
The Here and Now: After taking some time off from board leadership, Floyd accepted an invitation to join the Methodist Healthcare Foundation Board of Directors. When he heard about Methodist’s efforts to provide community-based resources and utilize the Congregational Health Network to direct patient navigation through personal relationships and community engagement, he became excited to learn more and discover ways he could be a part of those efforts.
A Purpose: “I want to engage fellow board members. I want to create a bridge from our Foundation board room to what is happening in the community and discover ways we can support that.”
