About the Ranking
All hospitals in the American Hospital Association (AHA) database (a total of 4,852 hospitals) were included in the 2011-12 analysis. The analysis was based upon data submitted via the AHA survey in 2009. To be considered in any of the data-driven specialties, a hospital had to meet at least one of the following criteria:
- Be a teaching hospital, or be affiliated with a medical school
- Have at least 200 beds
- Have 100 or more beds plus availability of four or more types of medical technology, such as a PET/CT scanner and certain precision radiation therapies that are considered important in a high-quality medical facility.
Each of the hospitals received a U.S. News score from 0 to 100 based on four basic elements: reputation, mortality rate, patient safety, and care-related factors such as nursing and patient services. The 50 top performers are ranked utilizing these four elements.
Methodist was cited as best in 12 medical specialties: cancer, diabetes/endocrinology, ear/ nose/throat, gastroenterology, geriatrics, gynecology, heart and heart surgery, kidney disorders, neurology and neurosurgery, orthopedics, pulmonary and urology.
