Center for Brain Tumor Research

Scientific research plays a crucial role in advancing clinical care, and at the Methodist University Hospital Neuroscience Institute, the Center for Brain Tumor Research (CBTR)is making great strides in addressing the biologic and therapeutic issues relevant to brain cancer.

The CBTR is a basic science research group that has partnered with the Methodist Neuroscience Institute, the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) and the Semmes-Murphey Neurologic & Spine Institute to develop cutting-edge research and technologies for the treatment of cancers of the brain and spinal cord.

Established in 2004, the CBTR develops molecular research for brain cancers, creates translational research to convert basic science into clinical tools and therapies and combines new technologies and therapies with neurosurgical excellence to provide patients with a new hope for the future.

Cancers of the Brain and Spinal Cord
Recently the Central Brain Tumor Registry of the United States estimated that 180,000 new brain tumors were diagnosed, and that over 350,000 individuals in the United States were living with a brain tumor. Further, the incidence of primary brain tumors appears to be increasing in adults, becoming more and more a cancer of the elderly.

Model for Effective and Clinically Relevant Research
To build a diverse and clinically relevant research program, it is critical to bring physicians who treat brain cancer patients together with the scientists who study these cancers.
History and Purpose
The Center for Brain Tumor Research (CBTR) was established July 1st, 2002 under the direction of Jon Robertson, M.D., Professor and Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) and a leading member of the Semmes-Murphey Neurologic & Spine Institute.
