Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare Names Monica Wharton as Chief Legal Officer
Monica Wharton joins Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare as chief legal officer. In this role, she reports directly to CEO Michael Ugwueke and has responsibility for Legal Affairs, Claims Management and Corporate Compliance. Wharton is a member of the MLH System Leadership Team, the group of senior leaders charged with providing overall strategic direction to the organization. She replaces Lynn Field who retired after 23 years with MLH.
She comes to Methodist from Regional One Health where she served as chief legal officer, a position she held since 2008. In that role, Wharton was the principal attorney and general counsel for the Regional One system, managing all aspects of legal affairs and risk management. Prior to that, she was an attorney with Glankler Brown, handling civil litigation cases in the areas of healthcare, employment and contracts.
Wharton earned her Juris Doctor from the William and Mary School of Law, and her Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Hampton University. A member of the Leadership Memphis class of 2014, Wharton is active in the Memphis community, serving on the boards of the New Memphis Institute, Facing History and Ourselves and the American Heart Association. She is also active in a number of professional organizations, including the Health Law Executive Council of the Tennessee Bar Association and the Healthcare Roundtable for General Counsel.
