Inaugural The Ride to Conquer Cancer® to Benefit Mid-South Patients

The Ride to Conquer CancerHow much energy would you exert to conquer cancer? For anyone who’s been touched by this insidious disease, the answer is, without a doubt, as much energy as it takes. On Sunday, May 5, 2013, anyone who wants to join the fight can suit up for the first The Ride to Conquer Cancer® race. The event is hosted by the cancer center partnership between the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC), The West Clinic and Methodist Healthcare. The focus of the ride is to unite the community and region to bring an end to cancer.

The 3.5 mile, looped bike course begins at 9 a.m. at The West Clinic on Humphreys Boulevard. Riders will travel east to Kirby Road and circle back to The West Clinic to the start/finish area. The inner two lanes of Humphreys Blvd. are open to bike traffic. Cyclists will have three hours to complete the loop, either racing competitively or riding leisurely. Teams and individuals will receive awards for the most completed laps and fastest laps for each of the various categories, further enhancing the challenge for any level cyclist.

The goal of The Ride to Conquer Cancer® race is to appeal to anyone who wants to help regional cancer patients fight their battles with one of the nation’s leading killers and expand top level cancer research in the region.

“The success of our new partnership with Methodist Healthcare and the University of Tennessee Health Science Center has been amazing,” said Lee S. Schwartzberg, MD, Medical Director of The West Clinic.  “This one-of-a-kind cancer collaborative is rapidly moving forward with the development of a regional comprehensive cancer center.”

All funds raised will support the Comprehensive Cancer Center—a  partnership of The West Clinic, Methodist Healthcare and University of Tennessee Health Science Center—and underwrite cancer research projects, startup grants that lead to larger grants and efforts to recruit and support top scientific minds whose work will lead to new cures.

The venue will provide a wonderful cycling experience for all- including the riding novice, the cancer survivor, a friend/family member of someone enduring cancer treatment, and the elite racer.

About The Cancer Center Partnership

The West Clinic, Methodist Healthcare and the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) formed a novel partnership in 2012 to transform cancer care in the Mid-South. The partnership takes advantage of the strengths and cultures of all three partners leading to the development of a fully integrated cancer program, which will expand collaborative efforts in cancer research and education with a vision toward personalized precision cancer care. The West Clinic has been the Mid-South’s premier provider of cancer care for more than 33 years, offering specialists in Medical Oncology, Hematology, Gynecologic Oncology, Breast Surgery, Endocrinology, Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology, Pain and Palliative Care, and other advanced medical care. Methodist Healthcare is a seven-hospital health system that also includes a home health agency, ambulatory surgery centers, outpatient facilities and physician practices serving the Mid-South. For the third year in a row, Methodist was named best hospital in Memphis by US News and World Report.  UT Health Science Center is the only public statewide academic health system with a mission to bring the benefits of the health sciences to the achievement and maintenance of human health by pursuing an integrated program of education, research, clinical care, and public service. For more information visit,, or
