Mission

In partnership with its medical, technical, and educational staff, the Methodist University Hospital School of Nuclear Medicine Technology will prepare students to graduate with above average entry-level competency in Nuclear Medicine Technology. In addition, students will be taught and encouraged to provide effective, compassionate care giving to all patients throughout their careers. The clinical and didactic educational experiences will be in accordance with the Essentials and Guidelines for an Accredited Educational Program for the Nuclear Medicine Technologist; thus qualifying the student to sit for nationally recognized examinations.

Graduate students will be:

  • Clinically and didactically competent and able to apply their knowledge and perform imaging procedures as appropriate for an entry-level Nuclear Medicine Technologist.
  • Able to demonstrate effective communication skills, critical thinking, and problem solving skills necessary for professional practice.
  • Marketable in today's medical imaging environment.
  • Able to meet the professional needs of the community.

Professional Duties

The Nuclear Medicine Technologist is a highly specialized healthcare professional who works closely with the nuclear medicine physician. Primary responsibilities include:

  • Preparing and administering radioactive chemical compounds, known as radiopharmaceuticals
  • Performing diagnostic patient imaging procedures using radiation-detecting instrumentation
  • Providing images, data analysis, and patient information to the physician for diagnostic interpretation

General Information

  • Twelve month educational program
  • All didactic courses taught at Methodist Facilities and their clinical affiliates
  • Clinical Education provided by multiple sites throughout the Memphis area
  • Upon completion of the program, the student is eligible to sit for national Registration/Certification examinations in Nuclear Medicine Technology

Methodist University Hospital Schools of Radiologic and Imaging Sciences has a document of articulation with Arkansas State University.  With a minimal 2.0 cumulative GPA, graduates from the Methodist program will document 24 credit hours at ASU toward the Bachelor of Radiological Sciences degree. The hours are in addition to any other hours awarded for Radiologic Technology program.

Tuition

  • $4,500 for 12 month JRCNMT-Accredited Program

Books

  • Approximately $800 for all books and related educational materials
  • Students must independently purchase ALL required books prior to the beginning of classes.

Fees

  • $25 (approximately) for required liability insurance
  • $50 non-refundable Application Fee
  • $150 non-refundable Student Activities Fee

Students are directly responsible for the cost of their meals, clothing, laundry, transportation, housing accommodations, and other 'living' expenses. Parking at all Methodist facilities is provided free of charge for enrolled students.

School of Nuclear Medicine Admissions Information and Requirements:

An equal opportunity is offered to each applicant regardless of sex, race, religion, or origin.

Applications are accepted for consideration from Dec 1 through postmark of March 1st of the year of application.  Students are selected in April and admitted to the program in May of each year.

Since enrollment is limited, preference is given to applicants with superior educational background.  All applicants are screened and the most outstanding and qualified candidates are accepted.

Applicant Must

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Be a graduate of an accredited program in Radiologic Technology
  • Be a registered or registry-eligible Radiologic Technologist*
  • Satisfy and provide proof of all published didactic pre-requisites

Post-secondary didactic courses must be completed in the areas of:

  • human anatomy and physiology
  • physics
  • mathematics
  • medical terminology
  • computer applications
  • oral and written communications
  • general chemistry

Admissions Pre-Requisites

  • Complete scheduled interviews with Educational Program's Admissions Committee.
  • Submit to and pass a physical examination and drug screen as administered by the Associate Health Department of Methodist University Hospital.
  • Be in satisfactory physical, mental, and emotional health as determined by the Methodist University Hospital Associate Health Department.
  • Meet technical standards for performing duties of the Nuclear Medicine Technologist as established by the administration of the School of Nuclear Medicine Technology.
  • Assure all application materials are received by School of NMT by stated deadline.
  • In the event an applicant has been or is employed by Methodist Healthcare, he/she must have a positive rehire eligibility status in order to gain final acceptance into the NMT program.

    *Acceptance of registry eligible applicants is contingent upon passing of ARRT examination.

Applicants who meet the above requirements will be informed of acceptance for consideration for admission. Those who do not meet the requirements will be notified as well.

NOTE:  The Admissions Committee reserves the right, in every case, to reject any applicant whose educational background, attitude, motivation, health, personality, and/or character do not indicate likelihood of success as determined by interviews, transcripts, examinations, and/or references.

Dexterity and Health Standards

  • Ability to exert force and lift objects of 50 pounds with assistance
  • Ability to perform simple motor skills for unrestricted time periods
  • Ability to perform manipulative skills (positioning and assisting patients)
  • Ability to perform tasks requiring eye-hand coordination
  • Ability to perform tasks requiring satisfactory visual and auditory acuity
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients and co-workers
  • Ability to protect self and others from unnecessary radiation exposure
  • Medical documentation indicating physical and mental ability to perform tasks above
