Our mission in the Methodist University Hospital Department of Pharmacy is to be the leader in providing pharmaceutical care to its patients through safe, rational, cost-effective and ethical drug therapy. Pharmaceutical care is provided through an integrated model using Patient Care Area Pharmacists (PCAP) and satellite pharmacies in the areas of Oncology, Solid Organ Transplant, Cardiology, Adult Intensive Care, Adult Medicine, Surgery, and Emergency Medicine. Clinical pharmacy services address patient needs in the Medicine Teaching Practice Clinic, and distributive services are provided in the Outpatient Pharmacy.

The Pharmacy Department at Methodist University Hospital consists of over 80 associates including 32 Pharmacists, 13 Clinical Specialists, 10 Pharmacy Residents and 27 Technicians. Clinical Specialists in the areas of Ambulatory Care, Cardiology, Critical Care, Emergency Medicine, Infectious Disease, Malignant Hematology, Solid Organ Transplant, Oncology, Internal Medicine, and Nephrology serve as resource personnel to the staff, provide patient care and educate students, staff and other health professionals.

Pharmacists are actively involved in medication order review, therapeutic monitoring, protocol management, patient education, student and resident preceptorship, and interactive relationships with the health care team. Pharmacy Technicians provide an integral component of the drug distribution system. Medication use processes are entirely computer-supported with state-of-the-art technology in pharmacy information systems. Unit dose distribution is automated
through the use of robotics and unit-based dispensing systems.

Our department is actively involved in several quality improvement programs including adverse drug reaction and medication error reporting and prevention, drug use evaluation, medication preparation quality control, protocol development, CMS indicators, and other medication use activities.
