Before Your Surgery

A nurse from our surgery center will contact you by phone prior to your scheduled surgery. The nurse will confirm the time you are expected to arrive and give you specific instructions to prepare you for surgery.

Here are some steps that you can take to help ensure a safe surgery and quick recovery:

  • Assistance: It is your responsibility to arrange, in advance, for a responsible adult, 18 years or older, to drive you to the surgery center and remain at the center throughout your entire stay. You cannot drive yourself or be left alone. In order to ensure your safety, we cannot discharge you to a cab, hired driver or bus. You will also need to have a responsible adult stay with you during the first 24 hours after surgery. Please ensure that these arrangements have been made before the day of your surgery. If these arrangements have not been made, your surgery will need to be rescheduled.
  • Diet: The nurse will give you specific instructions that must be followed carefully to ensure your surgery is performed safely on the day it is scheduled.
  • Smoking: If you smoke, you will be encouraged to refrain from smoking before your surgery.
  • Alcohol: You should not drink liquor, beer or wine the day before your surgery.
  • Drugs: Complete a medication form or bring a listing of all medications you are currently prescribed to take, along with any over-the-counter drugs you currently use.

If you get a cold, fever or rash, please contact your doctor. Your procedure may need to be rescheduled.

When you leave the pre-op area, your family will be asked to wait in the front lobby. The surgeon will speak with your family members immediately after the surgery. It is imperative that someone remains with you at the surgery center during your stay.

Before you to leave home the day of your surgery, remember these important tips:

  • Shower or bathe as you regularly would do. You will be given specific instructions if needed.
  • Do not eat or drink (unless otherwise instructed).
  • You may brush your teeth; however, be careful not to swallow any toothpaste or water.
  • Wear loose-fitting clothing.
  • Leave valuables such as jewelry, watches, cash and credit cards at home. We cannot be responsible for lost or damaged property.
  • Do not wear makeup or nail polish, especially if you are having hand or foot surgery.
  • If you wear contacts, please leave these at home and bring your glasses instead. Please bring a case to store your glasses in during your surgery.
  • Remove jewelry from all piercings.
