Since 1996, Methodist University Hospital has led the way in the advancement of minimally invasive surgery (MIS). Our surgeons are among the best in the country, often times inventing minimally invasive procedures right here at Methodist University Hospital. Minimally invasive surgery provides an alternative to traditional surgical procedures.
Methodist University Hospital continues to pioneer techniques in minimally invasive surgery through robotic surgery. Our surgeons are specially trained in the use of the da Vinci robot. Surgeons control the robot as they would with their hands, but the robot allows for greater magnification and access for hard-to-reach areas. Robotic surgery is an option for gynecology and urology procedures.
For some spinal, ENT and neurological procedures, surgeons use an endoscope, which is a thin, telescope-like instrument that is inserted through a small opening or incision. A small camera about the size of a dime is attached to the end of the endoscope, providing surgeons with a close-up view via television screen. Small surgical instruments are inserted through other incisions. Because incisions are kept small, large muscle retraction and scarring are minimal.
