Stroke Center

The Stroke Center at the Methodist Healthcare Neuroscience Institute uses evidence-based stroke protocols for management of strokes recommended by the Brain Attack Coalition and the American Stroke Association. Implemented protocols at Methodist University Hospital follow American Medical Association requirements for the establishment and operation of a primary stroke center to improve medical care of patients with strokes.

Symptoms of a Stroke

  • Numbness or weakness on one side of the body
  • Difficulty speaking or understanding
  • Difficulty seeing
  • Difficulty walking, loss of balance or coordination
  • Severe headache

Centralized resources at Methodist University Hospital combine the comprehensive services of interventional neuroradiologists, a neuro intensive care, inpatient stroke unit and inpatient rehabilitation.

The primary stroke center at Methodist University Hospital is complemented by stroke emergency services offered at Methodist's suburban hospitals, Methodist North Hospital, Methodist South Hospital and Methodist Le Bonheur Germantown Hospital.

Sixteen licensed beds, located on the 8th floor of the Tower, are devoted to the Stroke Center. The staff at Methodist University Hospital includes four renowned stroke neurologists and maintains two residents dedicated to stroke neurology. Registered nurses who assist with stroke care combine extensive experience, education and strong leadership where continuing personal and professional development is required. Nurses often partner with physicians in research projects.
