To provide our patients with as much information as possible, we've compiled a convenient list of some of our most frequently asked questions. If you find your particular question is not included, please feel free to contact one of our friendly staff members for more information.

Q: Does it matter where I go for diagnosis and treatment of a sleep disorder?

A: Your insurance provider can tell you which sleep facilities are covered by your plan. We recommend that you go to a sleep disorders center or lab that is accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM). The AASM's standards for accreditation ensure that sleep medicine providers are offering you the highest quality service in the areas of testing procedures, policies, safety, follow-up care and physician and staff training.

Q: How do I make an appointment if I think I have a sleeping disorder?

A: You can make an appointment two ways. You can refer yourself or you can have your physician refer you. Some insurance providers require that you have a referral from your primary care physician, so we recommend checking with your insurance provider first. After that, you can set up the appointment by calling 901.683.0044.

Q: What can I expect on my first appointment?

A: The first appointment will be a daytime office visit with one of our sleep specialists. The sleep specialist will ask you a series of questions about your medical history, medications, sleeping patterns and the reason for your visit. The specialist will then perform a physical exam by listening to your heart and lungs, as well as examining the inside of your nose, throat and ears. Depending on the findings of the examination, a sleep study will be scheduled for you.

Q: What can I expect during the sleep study?

A: After completing consent forms and assessment information, you will be shown to your room. A Sleep Center technician will give you information on the procedures that will occur, and you will be asked to change into your sleeping attire. Upon returning, the technician will begin to apply the monitoring equipment including placing sensors on your head and face. After the equipment is in place, the technician will perform a few calibration tests, say goodnight and retire to a separate area. This area allows the technician to see and hear everything in your room and document findings, events, vocalizations, etc. All information gathered during the course of the sleep study aides the physician in making an accurate diagnosis and developing a treatment plan for you. In the morning, the technician will wake you and remove all monitoring equipment. After completing a post-sleep assessment, you may go home.

Q: Is there an age limit for sleep studies?

A: No. We have the ability to provide relief for all ages, from newborn infants through senior adults.

Q: How do I prepare for my sleep study?

A: In preparation for your sleep study, take no naps on the day of the test and avoid caffeine. If you are taking prescription medications, continue to take as instructed. For your evening stay, you will need to bring sleeping attire consisting of a top and bottom and preferably made of cotton. Silk and other silky fabrics may cause the sleep study equipment to slide out of place. Other items you will need to bring with you include toothbrush, toothpaste, mouthwash and any other night time routine items. You may also choose to bring your favorite blanket and pillow as well as a book to read or a VHS/DVD video to watch prior to bedtime. If you wish to take a shower in the morning, bath linens are provided, but please remember to bring your shampoo and soap. For pediatric/infant patients, you will need to bring diapers, wipes, bottles and snacks. We also recommend bringing a favorite toy, stuffed animal, blanket or video to make your child is more comfortable.

Q: How do I find out the results of my sleep study?

A: All office visit reports and sleep study result reports will be faxed/mailed to the patient's physician of choice. Information for authorized physicians is available through Power Chart, a Cerner Electronic Medical Record product.
