What is a Hospice Residence?
A hospice residence is a free-standing facility where the terminally ill can go when the symptoms management becomes too complex, when the patient can no longer be cared for at home, when a period of rest is needed by the caregiver or when the patient finds themselves with no caregiver to help.
Why does the community need a hospice residence?
The closest hospice residence is more than 100 miles away. Last year alone, 248 Methodist hospice patients died in a hospital or nursing home setting. In fact, 42 percent of all hospice deaths occur in a clinical setting away from the comfort of a home-like environment. We believe that the faithful care of the dying is part of our stewardship for the divine gift of life.
What is the cost to build the hospice residence?
The total cost of our hospice residence is $9 million. We have taken the first step by pledging three million as part of our commitment to living the principles of the United Methodist Church.
What are some of the features of the hospice residence?
Made up of 30 beds, our hospice residence will have the ability to provide acute care rooms for those who require symptom management and short-term residential beds for those who cannot be cared for at home. Specialized equipment will be available to convert up to five of the rooms for the end-of-life care for infants and children.
Each of the rooms will be located on the first floor with a unique design allowing the patient’s bed to be wheeled into the outside gardens. Gardens and walking paths will abound so that those who cannot go outside everyday can enjoy a view of the landscape.
