Despite our hospice care, a void remains in our region for those who require a place of shelter at the end of life. Patient and family needs for the past few years reveal a trend and urgency for a hospice facility. Last year alone, 248 Methodist hospice patients died in a hospital or nursing home setting. This is not uncommon. In fact, 42 percent of all hospice deaths occur in a clinical setting away from the comfort of a home-like environment.

When symptoms management becomes too complex; when the patient can no longer be cared for at home; when a period of rest is needed by the caregiver; when the patient finds themselves with no caregiver to turn to – a hospice residence is the only answer for a dignified and caring death.

There is a call for a more clearly defined approach as to how our healthcare system cares for the dying. Research shows that the top four services Americans feel are most important for a loved one with limited life expectancy are:

• Ensuring the patient’s wishes are followed.
• Having a choice among types of end-of-life services.
• Pain control that is tailored to the patient’s wishes.
• Emotional support provided for the patient and family.
