Our cardiac services include a wide variety of treatment options. We provide the latest in heart care technologies with knowledgeable experts and a network of service locations to provide optimal cardiac services for you and your family.

Throughout the Mid-South, Methodist Healthcare physicians, nurses and staff provide excellent cardiac care through one of the largest cardiac programs in the country. And it's all close to home.

Methodist patients benefit from a full-range of services, including both in- and outpatient cardiac catheterizations, electrophysiology studies, minimally invasive heart surgery and open heart-surgery.

Other cardiac services offered by Methodist Healthcare include:

HeartSTAT
A revolutionary step in the treatment of chest pain, HeartSTAT uses a specific set of protocols for patients who think they may be having a heart attack, allowing patients to receive a faster, more effective diagnosis than ever before. The new protocols, which are standardized diagnostic and treatment programs, include the addition of a dedicated area in each emergency department for chest pain patients.

HeartSTAT has four tracks of care and each has its own set of protocols.  Track 1 is used for patients who are definitely having a heart attack.Track 2 is for patients who have chest pain and may have heart problems but are not currently having a heart attack.Track 3 is for patients whose EKG and troponin levels are acceptable. They stay for additional testing, like a treadmill. Track 4 is for patients who come in with chest pain but have no apparent heart problems.

In addition to saving critical minutes to the diagnosis and treatment of heart attack patients, HeartSTAT can reduce a lengthy emergency department visit or completely eliminate a costly and unnecessary hospital admission for those patients who are ruled out for heart attack.

Those who need intervention are rapidly diagnosed and treated. Those who do not need intervention are more quickly ruled out for heart attack and can leave with peace of mind.

GE LightSpeed VCT 64-Slice Scanner
HeartSTAT is coupled with Methodist Healthcare's new GE LightSpeed VCT 64-Slice Scanner, the most advanced CT scan technology in the world. This new state-of-the-art imaging tool can scan the entire body in ten seconds and produce images of the heart and coronary arteries in less than five heartbeats.

LightSpeed VCT Procedures include:

  • Cardiac and coronary vessel analysis
  •  Coronary artery calcification scoring
  • Angiography studies

Radiologists can view such things as blockages in the coronary arteries, as well as the motion and pumping action of a patient's heart. Located at both Methodist North Hospital and Methodist South Hospital, the 64-Slice Scanner provides a level of technology previously unavailable in the Mid-South.

Interactive Heart Center
Heart-related medical conditions sometimes require surgical intervention. The best way to prepare for surgery is to be informed and educated about your condition and the procedure your doctor has recommended. Visit the Interactive Heart Center to learn more about heart-saving interventions.

Arrhythmia Treatment Center
One of the top centers in the United States, the Arrhythmia Treatment Center includes use of the Automatic Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (AICD). The center is led by Dr. James Porterfield, named one of the Best Doctors in America. Dr. Porterfield was also awarded the designation of Fellow of the Heart Rhythm Society. This is the highest category of membership and is based on research, published articles and contributions to the field of cardiology.

Cardiovascular Resource Center
Established to promote and enhance quality of life, The Cardiovascular Resource Center at Methodist University Hospital supports the educational, emotional, spiritual and financial needs of our cardiac and vascular patients, caregivers and their families.
