Transplant Nursing

Highly skilled nurses are essential to the success of the Methodist University Hospital Transplant Institute. Throughout all aspects of the transplant process, our nurses play a vital role in your transplant care.

Registered Nurse Pre-Coordinators
These nurses initially see patients to help determine transplantation eligibility. They educate the patient and the family about the transplantation process. Caring for the patient until they receive the transplant, they are a key part of the transplant team.

Nurse Practitioners
Once the patient has been transplanted, they receive care in our outpatient clinic. This is when the nurse practitioner becomes the primary care giver. They work hand in hand with the physicians to provide the best possible care to patients.

Dialysis Unit Nurses
The Dialysis Units are a very specialized and challenging area and require the skills of critical care nurses. Nurses perform procedures in the dialysis units, as well as bedside procedures for those patients who are too critical to move.

Transplant Procedural Unit Nurses
The Transplant Procedural Unit is a varied and fast paced environment for outpatient transplant procedures. Nurses in this area have an ambulatory surgery background. The nurses care for patients who need biopsies, blood transfusions, IV therapy and preparation for donation or transplantation.

Liaison Registered Nurse
Working closely with the nurse practitioner, physicians and unit registered nurses, the liaison nurses provide the best possible care to patients from the hospital to the clinic. They make sure that all information is shared between the two areas to ensure the best patient care.

Advanced Practice Nurses
Diverse and autonomous, the role of the advanced practice nurse is providing a variety of services for the patients and the staff, as well as helping with overall education.

Inpatient Nurses
The Transplant Institute has three inpatient units, including the Transplant Intensive Care Unit. The registered nurses in these units are skilled intensive care unit nurses with additional transplantation training.

Primary Transplant Unit Nurses
Kidney transplant patients come directly to these units after surgery. Nurses in these areas are skilled to take care of these critical patients both before and after surgery.
