Transplant Institute: History

The Methodist University Hospital Transplant Institute has a solid history, rich in research, innovation and a strong reputation in the transplant community. Born in the laboratory of Louis G. Britt, M.D., in 1968, the University of Tennessee Organ Transplant Program was the seed of what is now one the best transplant programs in the country.

In April 1970, Dr. Britt performed the first kidney transplant at UT Bowld Hospital, making it the sixth medical center in the nation to transplant a kidney. Since then, the program has performed more than 1,600 and has one of the most successful survival rates in the United States.

In 1982, we introduced the third liver transplant program in the country, and we have performed more than 400 since that time. In 1989, our transplant program began offering a treatment option for critically ill, diabetic patients with our kidney-pancreas and pancreas-only transplants.

In November 2002, Methodist Healthcare assumed operation of UT Bowld, a transplant center with an outstanding history of treating transplant patients from across the United States. This strengthened an already strong relationship established through our pediatric transplant program at Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center. In July 2004, the world-renowned transplant services moved to our flagship hospital, becoming the Methodist University Hospital Transplant Institute.
