Autonomic Nervous System Functions Laboratory

Autonomic Functions are a series of painless tests that are performed to detect any abnormalities in the autonomic function nervous system. The autonomic division of the peripheral nervous system regulates the activity of smooth muscle, cardiac muscle and certain glands.  The autonomic system is also responsible for changes in pupil size, dilation of blood vessels, adjustment of the rate and force of the heartbeat and secretion by most glands, including sweat glands and tear ducts.

A comprehensive series of painless tests are available in the Autonomic Functions Lab at the Methodist Neuroscience Institute.  These tests include cardiovascular procedures, sweat tests and skin blood flow tests. Symptoms that may indicate a need for autonomic nervous system tests include:

  • fainting spells
  • dizziness
  • excessive sweating
  • weakness
  • nausea
  • loss of or change in taste
  • changes in vision
  • diarrhea
  • vomiting

To schedule tests in the Autonomic Nervous System Function Lab, your referring physician should call 901.516.7670.
