Successful Resume Writing

A resume is a one or two page summary of your education, skills, accomplishments and experience. Unless you have considerable experience, keep your resume to one page.

Your resume helps you get an interview. Although it's not what gets you the job, a good resume can keep you from getting excluded from consideration.

  • Resumes should be written in objective language. Avoid using personal pronouns such as "I" and "my."
  • Provide an alternate number in case you are not reachable by your contact phone number. Make sure the owner of the alternate phone knows they might receive calls.
  • Make sure your address is complete, including zip code. Some companies like sending status updates, such as when your application has been received or when a position has been filled.
  • Don't embellish your skills, as you may be asked to demonstrate them.
Resumes should always, always be clean and free of any errors. White or ivory linen paper is recommended as it brings attention to your document. Other popular colors and textures are light blue, gray and marble.

Your resume should include five main sections:

  • Personal Information
  • Objective
  • Employment History
  • Education
  • Skills

Outline your achievements briefly and concisely using action words to describe your experience. In the Objective section, discuss your goals and how you can help the company achieve its goals. Also, describe how you are the best candidate for the job.

In the Employment History section, describe how you qualify for each minimum requirement listed. (Be specific about where, when and how you obtained it.) Provide the number of years of experience and account for any gaps in employment. Also in the Employment History section, spell names correctly and verify dates of employment. Give short but complete job descriptions, focusing on past duties that may be helpful in the new job.

Only list education that resulted in a diploma, degree or certificate. List only the education that is relevant to the position you want, as well as relevant skills. Focus on what the employer is looking for in the candidate.

We wish you the best of luck in your job search.
