Pediatric Critical Care for Respiratory Therapists

Working with children in healthcare is a rewarding but challenging experience. At Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center, we want to make the transition from adult to pediatric care as smooth as possible.

Our Pediatric Critical Care Internship for Respiratory Therapists program provides us with the opportunity to help respiratory therapists feel more comfortable shifting to a new area. During the four-month program, experienced RRTs receive expanded pediatric training to help them apply theory, further develop skills and perform competently in a pediatric care setting.

The program supports the transition into pediatrics through formal education opportunities, peer support and clinical experiences with various types of pediatric patients in the critical care units. Career guidance and counseling also are available.

Program Requirements
Candidates must:

  • Be an RRT with a minimum of 1-year post-graduate respiratory care experience. (BS and Critical Care experience preferred.)
  • Meet the Tennessee licensure requirements. (Tennessee Department of Health Related Boards)
  • Be dedicated to accomplishing the necessary requirements of this challenging course and commit to a predetermined length of employment.
  • Love kids and respiratory care.

As an intern, respiratory therapists are considered regular, full-time Associates with pay and benefits. Upon graduation from the program, they transition into a staff position. There are three classes a year, with each one lasting four months. Seating is limited and candidate selection is competitive.
