After 31 years of service, Eleanor Gaither is still doing what she loves-taking care of her Fayette County friends, family and neighbors.
Having been a member of the growing community all her life, 64-year-old Eleanor enjoys being in the position of giving back to the community that gave to her for so many years.
"Being a native of that county, I know most of the patients who come through our doors. I know their families," she said. "Over the years, I've been able to take care of people who've had a great influence on my life, such as teachers who taught me in high school and grammar school. In a way it's kind of an honor to be able to take care of the people who've helped you."
As a full-time nurse at Methodist Fayette Hospital, Eleanor's dedication to serving her community has not wavered. Her tireless commitment led to her recent honor of being named the hospital's 2004 Nurse of the Year. This is the second time she has received this award.
She went to St. Joseph School of Nursing before getting her associate's degree from The University of Memphis (then Memphis State University). Starting her career as a licensed practical nurse, Eleanor became a registered nurse over 25 years ago.
While her career was developing, her personal life was growing as well. She and her husband raised two children, and today she is a proud grandmother of five.
Eleanor takes great pride in her commitment to patient care at Methodist Fayette Hospital. "I've enjoyed working at Methodist Fayette," she added. "It's about teamwork here. The whole hospital is one big team working to benefit patients."
