Methodist University Hospital’s (MUH) robotic surgery program recently hit its 100th surgical case, reflecting a growing trend in the robotics field. Mark Reed, M.D., FACOG, a gynecologic oncologist with the West Clinic, was the surgeon who performed the hospital’s 100th robotic surgical case.
MUH purchased its da Vinci robotic surgical system in June 2008 and performed its first robotic surgery in July. Methodist North Hospital (MNH) also has a da Vinci robotic surgical system. MNH started using the robotic surgical system in October 2007 and has performed 307 procedures.
Robotic surgery offers a number of benefits over traditional open surgery including less pain, faster recovery, shorter hospital stay, and a faster return to normal activities. The da vinci robotic surgical system can be used for a variety of surgeries including hysterectomy, prostatectomy, colorectal, nephrectomy, pyeloplasty, and thoracic surgeries.
