Rolando Toyos, M.D., medical director and founder of Toyos Clinic is now performing cataract removal surgeries at Methodist Fayette Hospital. Affecting more than 20 million Americans over age 40, cataracts are caused by a clouding of the ocular lens which can make objects look blurred and/or impair night vision. Dr. Toyos uses a procedure known as AquaLase, the latest technology in cataract surgery. During the surgery the cataract is dissolved using warm pulses of solution that wash away the lens layer by layer. Once the damaged lens is removed it is replaced with a new lens. The procedure can be done on an outpatient basis and doesn’t require shots or stitches. “We’re excited to be partnering with Dr. Toyos and to begin offering this important surgical procedure,” said David Crislip, associate administrator and chief nurse executive at Methodist Fayette Hospital. “This is an incredible convenience to patients who prior to this would have to drive to Memphis for cataract surgery. Methodist is committed to providing exceptional care to our patients and our community. Our partnership with Dr. Toyos is another step in this commitment.” Dr. Toyos received his undergraduate degree from the University of California at Berkeley and his master’s from Stanford University. He received his medical degree from the University Of Illinois College Of Medicine and completed his residency in ophthalmology at Northwestern University and Chicago Children’s Hospital.
