The combined graduate degree and residency is a two-year program offered by the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in collaboration with Methodist University Healthcare. The program combines academic studies, residency training and research with an emphasis in health-system pharmacy administration. Participants will gain experience in the provision of pharmaceutical care as well as didactic and practical leadership experiences in a large community teaching hospital and health-system. Opportunities for research, precepting students, and didactic teaching are available.Graduates of the program will possess the competencies necessary to accept leadership roles in health-system pharmacy. Master of Science Degree The Master of Science degree in Health Outcomes and Policy Research with emphasis in Health-Systems Pharmacy Management is offered by the University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy. Each student must complete a minimum of 42 credit hours from such fields as pharmacy practice, business administration, health care administration, information technology and other fields as necessary to meet personal goals and interests. Completion of a research project and the preparation of a master of science thesis describing the investigation are required of each student. Residency The PGY-1/PGY-2 residency in health-system pharmacy administration is a two-year program offered by the Methodist University Hospital Department of Pharmacy. Methodist Healthcare is a not-for-profit integrated health care system comprised of seven hospitals in the Memphis area. The majority of residency training will be completed at Methodist University Hospital, a 580-bed tertiary care referral center and the hub of the system. Residency rotation will include, but are not limited to: critical care, outpatient anticoagulation, internal medicine, clinical electives, medication use policy, clinical services management, pharmacy operations management, pharmacy administration and management electives. The resident is given the opportunity to manage a pharmacy area during the second year of the residency. Pharmacy Department The progressive pharmacy department at University Hospital provides a variety of services to patients and other health care professionals. Decentralized patient care area pharmacists provide pharmaceutical care by integrating clinical and dispensing responsibilities. Specialized services are provided in the surgery, oncology, critical care and transplant satellites. Clinical specialists provide support and education in outpatient anticoagulation, cardiology, critical care, internal medicine, medical oncology, hematology and bone marrow transplant, emergency medicine, neurosurgery, nephrology, and solid organ transplant. Drug information and investigational drug services are provided. The pharmacy department at Methodist is affiliated with the University of Tennessee and the University of Mississippi Colleges of Pharmacy and precepts approximately 140 students annually. Requirements The applicant must be a graduate of an accredited school of pharmacy and must meet the requirements for admission to the University of Tennessee Graduate School. Applicants must also be registered to participate in the ASHP Resident Matching Program. Stipend Methodist Healthcare will provide the resident with a stipend for the first year (approximately $40,000) and second year of residency (approximately $43,000). University of Tennessee tuition fees are waived. Professional society membership fees as well as Tennessee license fees are supported by the department. Benefits Full health care insurance is available. The resident may use up to 23 days off yearly (10 vacation, four sick and nine holidays). Unused days will be compensated at the end of the residency year. Support is available for attendance at professional education meetings.
