Residency Program Director
The Director of Pharmacy Services has ultimate responsibility for the residency program. The Assistant Director for Clinical Pharmacy Services serves as the Director of the Postgradulate Year One (PGY1) Pharmacy Residency, the Coordinator for Drug Information is the Director for the PGY2 Drug Information Residency, the Oncology Clinical Specialist is Director of the PGY2 Oncology Residency, the Solid Organ Transplant Clinical Specialist is Director of the PGY2 Solid Organ Transplant/Immunology Residency, an Internal Medicine Clinical Specialist is Director of the PGY2 Internal Medicine Residency and the Director of Pharmacy is the Program Director for the PGY1/PGY2 Health- System Pharmacy Administration Residency. The directors’ role includes responsibility for ensuring that the overall program goals and specific learning objectives are met, training schedules are maintained, appropriate preceptorship for each rotation or training period is provided, and that resident evaluations are conducted routinely and based on the pre-established learning objectives.
Preceptors
Each rotation has a pharmacist preceptor who develops and guides learning experiences to meet the residency program’s goals and objectives, and with consideration of the resident’s goals, interests and skills. The preceptor periodically reviews the resident’s performance, with a final written evaluation at the conclusion of the learning experience.
Facilitator
Each resident selects a preceptor to be the facilitator to advise them throughout the year. Facilitators review the resident’s broad plan to assist them in developing a program of development for the year. On a quarterly basis, the facilitator reviews the resident’s progress, and together with the resident, makes modifications in the plan for development. The facilitator also guides the resident as they select their project and research committee, to find preceptors to assist them with their presentations and to guide them in career choices.
Project Committee
Each resident is required to complete one major project relating to a specific aspect of pharmacy practice. Findings are presented at an annual Pharmacy Resident Conference and written up in manuscript format. A project committee composed of a primary project advisor and at least two other preceptors (at least one clinical and one administrative preceptor) assists the resident with planning, implementing, analyzing, and presenting the project. The resident shall select a project idea and a primary project advisor within six weeks of entering the program. The remainder of the committee shall be selected within three months of entering the program.
Residency Preceptors Committee
The Residency Preceptors Committee, a standing committee of the Department of Pharmacy, is composed of the residency program preceptors. It serves in an advisory capacity to the Director of the Residency Program, and endeavors to maintain the quality and consistency of the residency program. Further, the committee provides a forum for preceptors to discuss common concerns, to develop additional learning experiences, and to promote new and innovative areas of practice. The Assistant Director for Clinical Pharmacy Services serves as the Chairman of the committee. The committee meets monthly. Special functions of the committee include:
- the continuous evaluation of the residency curriculum, goals and objectives;
- quarterly evaluation of resident progress;
- the evaluation and support of resident projects; and
- resident recruitment and selection.
This committee reports directly to the Methodist Healthcare Pharmacy Residency Coordinating Committee, a committee composed of the directors of residency programs for all Methodist Healthcare residency programs.
