Methodist Healthcare has provided outstanding graduate medical training to new physicians for more than 60 years. Contributing to our position as one of the top teaching hospitals in the country is our fundamental commitment to educating residents to evidence-based medicine in a real-world environment. As a result of that commitment, we have a program renowned for patient care, resident satisfaction and academic performance. Opened in 1958, our Transitional Residency Program works with the Internal Medicine Department at Methodist University Hospital and trains 11 transitional year interns at one time. Most pursue careers in Ophthalmology or Radiology, but others have gone on to complete residencies in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Anesthesia, Radiation Oncology and Internal Medicine. Methodist's relationship with the University of Tennessee Health Science Center residency and fellowship programs continues to develop and offer mutually beneficial opportunities. University medical students, along with visiting medical students and externs, rotate through the Methodist system for training in physical diagnosis, core medicine, junior internships and subspecialty training in areas such as neurology and emergency medicine. Whether learning or teaching, Methodist residents have no shortage of great opportunities.
