Methodist Extended Care Hospital (MECH) is a 36-bed acute care hospital that treats long-term patients who are medically stable but require intense, regular medical attention. Patients get the acute care they need to ensure a smooth transition to home, skilled care, nursing home, rehabilitation facility, or home health care.

MECH is located on the fourth and fifth floors of the Thomas Wing inside Methodist University Hospital

Family Presence/Visiting Guidelines

There are no set visiting hours. Partners in Care and close family may be with patients 24/7. Other guests are welcome according to the patient’s preference (including Critical Care/ICU) between 8:30 a.m. - 9:00 p.m. to respect quiet time and sleeping hours.

Rehabilitation Program

We provide skilled evaluations and custom treatments for:

  • Stroke and neurological conditions
  • Congestive heart failure
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Traumatic brain injury (TBI)
  • Post-surgical and orthopedic injury
  • Prosthetic and orthotic training
  • Balance training
  • General conditioning

Ventilator Weaning Program

We provide individualized programs for patients with acute or chronic respiratory disorders who may have artificial airways and/or ventilators or require extensive respiratory treatments to maintain normal breathing without mechanical support. We also offer basic ventilator and tracheotomy care training for those who will be caring for the needs of a loved one. We commonly treat:

  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Pneumonia
  • Asthma
  • Acute respiratory failure

Wound Care Program

For wounds including:

  • Arterial/venous ulcers
  • Pressure ulcers
  • Diabetic/neuropathic ulcers
  • Surgical debridement
  • Post-surgical or amputation complications
