Some procedures do not require complete sedation or being put to "sleep," but many times procedures that can be painful or scary to your child can be performed with moderate sedation. We are committed to easing the pain, anxiety and fear of children with "distraction therapy" and the Starlight Room. Distraction therapy uses relaxation techniques to keep your child's mind focused on peaceful thoughts and images during medical procedures. This new practice helps our patients by reducing their pain by providing comfort during their medical procedures. One special friend that helps comfort and distract our patients is Bernard. This little green puppet will visit your child prior to their treatment to ease their fears and offer words of encouragement. We also have specially trained child life therapists to help children cope with procedures. Made possible by donations from Le Bonheur Club, the Starlight Room provides a calm, quiet environment and a number of distractions while procedures are performed. Some of these include stars on the ceiling in a small room with soft lights that provide a peaceful setting, bubbles that change in size and color, and a projector displaying moving scenes of clouds and other serene images. Here, your child will be in a safe, controlled environment with our anesthesiologists and specially trained nurses providing moderate sedation.
