Our hematology staff works closely with the staff at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and the faculty of University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) to evaluate and treat patients with known or suspected blood disorders such as sickle cell disease, anemia, hemophilia and other coagulation disorders. Outpatient procedures are performed at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. In addition to a pediatric hematologist, the staff includes a nurse specialist, a psychologist, a social worker and a genetic counselor. Research and education are important components of the program, and St. Jude offers counseling and education to families of children with sickle cell and individuals with sickle cell traits. Outreach screening, counseling and educational services are also provided to at-risk populations. For more information, please visit the St. Jude Web site. Le Bonheur provides inpatient care treatment for children with sickle cell disease. Certified nurses also perform apheresis therapy, typically at the bedside. Camp Courage (through St. Jude) Camp Courage, a camp for children with sickle cell disease is held each summer, offering campers a wide variety of recreational and educational activities. Children and adolescents ages 7-15 can participate, with a preference for first-time campers.
