Our general pediatricians offer comprehensive medical treatment for children. From preventive care and treatments of acute illnesses to on-going treatment of chronic conditions, our pediatricians work closely with other pediatric specialists for the best medical treatment of your child.

In addition to their medical training, pediatricians have three additional years of training specifically with children. As most parents know, working with children is different than working with adults. Children are much more than little adults. They function differently as they grow. Pediatricians treat newborns, children and adolescents.

Our pediatricians have extensive clinical knowledge of children and their diseases and disorders to deliver the best child friendly and family-centered medical care.

How to Find a Pediatrician

One of the first steps parents take to find a pediatrician is to get  recommendations from friends and family. Check into the pediatrician's background and education. Also find out if she is board-certified or board-eligible.

Next, ask yourself some questions about what you want from a pediatrician. Do you want a physician who is younger or older? An older physician may have more experience, but may retire before your child grows into adulthood. Check with your insurance to ensure the pediatrician is on your insurance plan. If you do not have insurance, you can check with the pediatrician's office to see what payment arrangements can be made.

You can also check with Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center to make sure the pediatrician is on medical staff. You can meet with several pediatricians and visit their offices before you make a decision. It is important for you to feel comfortable with your child's pediatrician.

Immunizations
As a parent, one of the most important ways to protect your child's health is through immunizations. Before immunizations, thousands, sometimes millions of children died because of diseases such as polio or the measles. Most schools and day cares require records of immunizations before the child can start. Parents should check with their child's pediatrician to find out what vaccines are available and when the child should be immunized.  Click here for more information on immunization schedules.

If your child does not have insurance, there are several ways to get help in paying for the vaccinations. Ask your pediatrician's office for resources, or call the state of Tennessee at 901.544.7708.

Choosing Child Care
Because of work or other situations, many parents need additional help in caring for their child. You have many options available, such as a baby-sitter, a nanny, or a day-care. Just as with choosing a pediatrician, it is also very important to choose your child's caregiver wisely. You should check into the background of any caregiver, along with checking references. Every licensed child-care facility is annually reviewed by the state and issued a report card. These report cards must be clearly posted for all parents.  Click here for more information from our Practical Parenting eNewsletter.
