Dreyfus Project

In 2004, Le Bonheur Community Outreach expanded into the Clarksdale, Miss., market with the Dreyfus Project. This project facilitates interaction between Dreyfus Project staff and children to determine health problems that face the students, and together they develop ways for improving the overall health of young people. Students participate in six interactive sessions to address health problems initially identified ed in focus groups. Some of the students from this program become peer educators for the next year’s session.

Through the Eyes of a Student

Le Bonheur Community Outreach continues to look for innovative ways to gain a deeper understanding of the lives of students in the Mid-South and help them live happier lives. Our staff developed Through the Eyes of a

Student, a program designed to understand the challenges facing children and teens. Le Bonheur gave disposable cameras to students in grades 4, 8, 11 and 12 and asked them to keep a photo-journal with the pictures.

A panel of judges selected approximately 70 photos to publish. The photographs from students in Trenton, Tenn., were published in two books:  Through the Eyes of a Student and Through the Eyes of a Student – a Second Look. Le Bonheur Community Outreach used the photos and quotes from the students in Clarksdale, Miss., to develop a health calendar. This project was featured as a model in Children’s Hospitals Today, the monthly publication produced by the National Association for Children’s Hospitals and Related Institutions (NACHRI).
