Research is a cornerstone of the Neuroscience Institutes's mission. From basic science to bed side research, our physicians, nurses and other healthcare professionals are making discoveries to improve the lives of children. Our Neuroscience Institute has become a national leader in treating children with brain tumors, epilepsy and sleep disorders.
Le Bonheur’s Neuroscience Institute is leading national efforts to advance research in pediatric
neurology. Institute Director Dr. James Wheless is the Mid-South’s primary investigator for a National Institutes of Health study to test seizure drugs in children with absence epilepsy – a common version of the disease also known as “staring spells.”
Investigators are also introducing a genetic component into the study in hopes of pinpointing a specific protein that is present in children affected with epilepsy. The project, which includes 36 research centers across the country, is the largest pediatric epilepsy study funded by the federal agency.
Investigators at the Neuroscience Institute at Le Bonheur Children's work closely with the Methodist Healthcare Institutional Review Board and the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. Visit the Methodist Healthcare IRB Site.
