Neuroscience Institute: A Center of Excellence

Our Neuroscience Institute serves as a regional hub for the evaluation and treatment of neurological disorders in children and adolescents. Neurology refers to that specialty concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the nervous system which requires medical treatment, whereas neurosurgery refers to the specialty concerned with nervous system disorders requiring surgical treatment. The neuroscience center provides general pediatric neurology and pediatric neurosurgery services as well as highly specialized interdisciplinary clinical programs.

About 1,500 adolescents and children with neurological problems are hospitalized annually at Le Bonheur. Our pediatric neurosurgeons and neurologists emphasize continuity of care and communication with the primary care physician when treating these patients. The Neuroscience Institute provides ongoing support for children and adolescents with neurological problems including birth defects, degenerative neurological diseases, learning and behavior disorders, brain tumors, seizures, spasticity and traumatic injuries.

Pediatric Brain Tumor Program
Le Bonheur has four board certified pediatric neurosurgeons leading the largest pediatric brain tumor program in the country.
Comprehensive Epilepsy Center
We have an interdisciplinary team of pediatric specialists who treat children and adolescents with the most effective medical available.
Neuroimaging
In addition to high-tech surgical diagnostics, we offer several capabilities in dagnostic neuroimaging, such as electroencephalogram (EEG), computerized tomography (CT scans) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI scans).
Neurology and Neurosurgery
Our Neuroscience Institute serves as a regional hub for the evaluation and treatment of neurological disorders in children and adolescents.
Sleep Center
The Sleep Disorders Center is the only sleep center in the region dedicated to treating children from infancy to 18 years of age.
Spina Bifida Clinic
We provide a full-day clinic to children diagnosed with spina bifida.
Center for Pediatric Neuropsychology
We specialize in measuring the way your child's brain functions through a series of standardized tests.
The Neuroscience Unit
The hub of the Neuroscience Institute is the dedicated inpatient unit. The Neuroscience Unit, located on the 5th Floor of the hospital, is comprised of 20 private patient rooms that accommodate different levels of care.

MEG Technology
Magnetoencephalography (MEG) is a non-invasive neurophysiological technique that measures the magnetic fields generated by activity of the brain. Le Bonheur Neuroscience Institute is one of only a few centers in the country with the expertise available.
