Le Bonheur Children's Hospital

NICU Team

Le Bonheur's NICU team includes five board-certified neonatologists, each certified in neonatal and perinatal medicine as well as in pediatrics. Additionally, a comprehensive team of specialists work together to provide the very best care for your baby.

The following are some of the specially trained healthcare professionals who will be involved in the care of your baby:

  • Neonatologist - a pediatrician with additional training in the care of sick and premature babies. The neonatologist supervises pediatric fellows and residents, nurse practitioners, and nurses who care for babies in the NICU.
  • Neonatal nurse practitioner - a registered nurse (RN) who has completed advanced education and training in the diagnosis and management of common medical conditions for neonates
  • Respiratory therapist - a therapist who evaluates, treats, and cares for patients with breathing disorders.
  • Occupational therapist - a therapist who help newborns to improve activities needed for daily living.
  • Dietitian - a clincian who evaluates your child for any special dietary or nutritional needs.
  • Lactation consultant - a consultant who helps with breastfeeding mothers and babies.
  • Pharmacist - a clinician responsible for your child's medication.
  • Social worker - a specially trained staff member who help support patients and families during a child's illness.
  • Hospital chaplain - a ministry staff member who provides spiritual care and counseling to parents, children, family and friends.

The members of the NICU team work together with parents to develop a plan of care for high-risk newborns. Ask about the NICUs parent support groups and other programs designed to encourage parental involvement.
