Hospital History Timeline

  • The original Le Bonheur Children's was opened on June 15, 1952 at a cost of $2,220,000.
  • On May 13, 1974, Le Bonheur dedicated a $5.4 million expansion that increased the number of beds from 89 to 140.  Two new floors added 10,000 square feet.  In that was included eight new operating rooms, a dialysis unit and an intensive care unit for children under two-years-old, among other additions.
  • From 1977 - 1979, Le Bonheur added a four story patient wing that housed 106 new patient rooms.  It replaced the original patient wing, which was then used as administrative offices and space for support services.  A new ambulatory care center and auditorium were also added.  The $13 million addition and renovation increased the number of beds from 140 to 225.
  • In 1991, the Physician's Office Building was opened.
  • In 1994, the seven story West Patient Tower was opened to complete the Le Bonheur of today.
