Fun Exercise and Healthy Food Choices Highlight Child Health Week 2008

West Tennessee children will dance with a mayor and learn how to choose and prepare healthy meals as part of Child Health Week. Several local events organized by Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center will spotlight easy ways to prevent childhood obesity.

Child Health Week, organized by The Governor's Office of Children’s Care Coordination, is a state-wide effort to highlight ways that children and families can make healthy eating choices and engage in physical activity. This year’s theme, “Healthy Youth, Healthy Future.”, focuses on eliminating childhood obesity. The events in Shelby County have been organized with the support of the Shelby County Office of Early Childhood and Youth.

Dietician is guest on Good Morning Le Bonheur
Tuesday, Oct. 14 at 9 a.m.

The hospital’s Good Morning Le Bonheur show will take a healthy spin for Child Health Week. During the 30-minute show broadcast to all patient rooms in the hospital, a hospital dietician will talk to children about how to increase exercise time and make healthy food choices.

Healthy Trivia
Wednesday, Oct. 15 at 11 a.m.
Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center
Le Bonheur patients will be challenged with trivia questions related to health during the live televised Game Show. The questions will promote education on childhood obesity and how families can work together to be fit.

Dance Dance Revolution In Jackson
Thursday, October 16, 9:15 a.m. and 10 a.m.
Jackson Preparatory School

Students and teachers at Jackson Preparatory School will heat up the floor as they showcase their best moves and grooves during a Dance Dance Revolution exercise program. At 9:15 a.m. with elementary school students, Madison County Mayor Jimmy Harris will issue a proclamation declaring Child Health Week. At 10 a.m., with the middle and high school students Jackson Mayor Jerry Gist will issue a proclamation declaring Child Health Week. Educators will talk with the students about fun ways to increase their physical activity. All students will take home a free Get Fit item. Le Bonheur Community Outreach will donate a Wii console for the school to use in PE or health education classes.

Cooking Demonstration

Le Bonheur’s chef will teach patients and their families easy recipes children can make at home. Research shows that children are more likely to eat what they help prepare. The cooking demonstration will teach kids healthy snack alternatives.

Students and teachers at MAHS will heat up the floor as they showcase their best moves and grooves during a Dance Dance Revolution exercise program. Educators will talk to the students about fun ways to increase their physical activity. Le Bonheur will donate a Wii console for the school to use in PE or health education classes.

All the tips Le Bonheur educators will teach this week are easy to implement at home. Learn how you can freeze the screen, put rainbows on your plate, and keep moving at your house.
