Minimally Invasive Surgery Center

Minimally Invasive Surgery Overview
Methodist Healthcare in Memphis, Tennessee, is on the forefront of minimally invasive surgery procedures, offering endoscopic, laparoscopic and robotic-assisted surgery techniques. Patients who undergo minimally invasive surgery often experience fewer complications, less pain and blood loss, quicker recovery times and shorter hospital stays.

History of Robotic-Assisted Surgery Program
In 2007, Methodist North Hospital (MNH) began using the da Vinci Robotic Surgical System, a minimally invasive surgical system that provides surgeons with an interactive video display, lower profile arms and greater mobility. Since then, MNH has performed more than 300 surgical procedures with the system. In June of 2008, Methodist University Hospital purchased the da Vinci robot and performed its 100th robotic-assisted surgery one year later. Methodist Healthcare’s minimally invasive surgery program expanded yet again when Methodist Le Bonheur Germantown Hospital received a da Vinci surgical system in early 2010.

About Robotic-Assisted Surgery
Robotic-assisted surgery offers a number of benefits over traditional open surgery. These include less pain, faster recovery, shorter hospital stay, and a faster return to normal activities. The da Vinci robotic surgical system can be used for a variety of surgeries, including:

Robotic Hysterectomy
A robotic hysterectomy is performed using the da Vinci Surgical System, which enables surgeons to perform with unmatched precision and control – using only a few small incisions. The da Vinci system provides the surgeon with a superior surgical tool for dissection and removal of lymph nodes during cancer operations, as compared to traditional open or minimally invasive approaches. A robotic hysterectomy also allows your surgeon better visualization of anatomy, which is especially critical when working around delicate and confined structures like the bladder. This means that surgeons have a distinct advantage when performing a complex, radical hysterectomy involving adhesions from prior pelvic surgery or non-localized cancer, or an abdominal hysterectomy.

Robotic Prostatectomy
Robotic prostatectomy with the da Vinci Robotic Surgical System incorporates the latest advancements in robotic-assisted technology and allows a surgeon greater visualization, enhanced dexterity, precision, control and superior ergonomics. For qualified candidates, the da Vinci ® Prostatectomy offers numerous potential benefits over the traditional open prostatectomy, including:

  • Shorter hospital stay
  • Less pair
  • Less risk of infection
  • Less blood loss and transfusions
  • Less scarring
  • Faster recovery
  • Quicker return to normal activities

Robotic Thoracic Surgery
Complex procedures like thoracic surgery require an excellent view of the operative field and the ability to maneuver instruments within the chest cavity. Robotic thoracic surgery with the da Vinci Surgical System provides better control, dexterity and visualization than with an open procedure, allowing surgeons to offer patients the benefits of minimally invasive surgery. Equipped with high definition, three-dimensional imaging capabilities, the da Vinci robot enables surgeons to perform thymectomies and other potentially traumatic procedures through 1-2 cm incisions, without spreading or cutting the breastbone or ribs, thereby minimizing blood loss, pain and scarring.
