The Methodist University Hospital Emergency Department is committed to excellence and providing quality healthcare to patients in our community. We currently have 14 physicians practicing, 10 of whom are board-certified, along with 10 Nurse Practitioners to provide coverage for Emergency Department patients.

Our ED is leading Methodist University Hospital in Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE), Electronic Medical Records (EMR) and has helped develop MUH as a Chest Pain Center, and Primary Stroke Center.

Our physicians are committed to continuing their own education in order to provide the most comprehensive and advanced care possible. A yearly course is offered to all Methodist ER physicians for skills updating which includes:

  • Airway review
  • Venous access
  • Other technical skills not routinely utilized.

Ray Walther, MD,FACEP, is the Medical Director for the MUH Emergency Department. His ED Physicians and mid-level providers are proud to serve approximately 57,000 patients every year. Dr. Walther and the other Emergency Physicians are also involved in the education of the University of Tennessee Health Science Center medical students and resident physicians, along with Nursing Students and NP students, lecturing 6 to 8 times per year on Emergency Medicine.

Between 3 and 6 resident physicians per month rotate through the Emergency Department and receive instruction and guidance by our attending physicians.
