For EMS

Methodist University Hospital is distinctively known for its partnership with the EMS community. The EMS community is very fortunate to have this affiliation as well as top leaders who believe in the importance of EMS. Kevin M. Spiegel, FACHE,  our CEO, understands that EMS is a vital part of the healthcare community. Our entire executive team recognizes that EMS accounts for a large percentage of the inpatient admissions through Methodist University Hospital’s Emergency Department, and that a successful relationship with the municipal and private services in our region will provide the best outcome for each patient who comes through our doors.

EMS Pilot Program

In September 2010, Methodist University Hospital took the lead with a cutting edge program that has expanded the role of the Tennessee licensed Paramedic from an EDT (Emergency Department Technician) to functioning as a licensed Paramedic by working with the RN in a team care model. In practical situations involving advanced skills that are outside the scope of an RN, the Paramedic will function under the supervision of the Emergency Department physician as allowed by the EMS Board Rules and Regulations. This is a pilot program for the entire Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare system, as well as among the first of its kind in the nation.Through legislation, the Tennessee EMS System was founded in 1972.

Tennessee licensed EMT’s and Paramedics are multi-functional in their ability to practice both outside as well as inside the hospital setting. However, often in the ED, EMT’s and Paramedics are limited to what skills they are allowed to perform. The Tennessee Division of EMS Board allows EMS’s and Paramedics to function in the Emergency Department under their own license, as long as it is done in cooperation with and under supervision of an Emergency Department Registered Nurse.

Over the past 38 years the EMS system has seen many changes that have challenged EMS providers to deliver the highest quality of care possible and continues to grow.
